SERVPRO of Prattville’s Swift Action: The Importance of Speed in Flood Damage Recovery
8/23/2024 (Permalink)
After a flood, your home likely has significant damage requiring fast restoration work.
Quick Response Time Is Key to Flood Damage
After a flood, your home likely has significant damage that requires fast restoration work. A rapid response and smooth restoration process are critical to ensuring that as little time and money as possible are spent on the damages. SERVPRO of Prattville is built around a strategy of mitigation, meaning we can respond around the clock to local homeowners' disasters and provide immediate, appropriate care to stop further damage from occurring. However, many homeowners ask, why is speed so important in our playbook?
Stopping Further Damage
The most important reason we respond so quickly to flood damage in Autaugaville is to reduce the overall damage sustained by the structure. While there may be significant initial damage from the flood, this can grow far more severe in a matter of hours as water remains in the building and further damage begins to manifest. Standing water may seep into materials and create long-term problems or pockets of water, potentially breaking down the home's foundation. In the shorter term, if water is not removed within a few hours of the flood, mold can start to grow and become a much more troubling issue for the home. Learn more about the risks of standing water and mold growth. In addition to responding and acting quickly to the scene of damage, SERVPRO® inspectors carefully monitor for these additional damages as mitigation efforts are taken.
Speeding Up Recovery Times
By arriving early to the scene, we can set up critical systems such as water extractors, dehumidifiers, and other water removal tools to hasten the drying process. The faster drying is completed, the sooner we can begin working on repairing damages, and the fewer we will have to handle. These advantages may speed up restoration times by days or even weeks, depending on the severity of the flood. For more information on flood recovery, visit FEMA's flood recovery guidelines.

What can Grow in Your Home After Flooding? | SERVPRO® of Prattville
8/1/2023 (Permalink)
Fungi tend to appear in any location that has been figuratively turned upside-down.
Organism Growth in Your Home After Flooding
Storm flooding damages your home and often sets it up as a breeding ground for organisms large and small if left alone. Fast water removal and the start of treatment are essential for anyone wishing to prevent organic growth in their flooded home, which is why SERVPRO® of Prattville uses a strategy of mitigation to respond quickly to a disaster and get it contained before further damage can occur. We fight hardest against these organisms in most residential flood cleanups.
Plants and Seedlings
Floods may wash in soil and debris, which can quickly accumulate in corners or out-of-reach places. However, this debris contains the seeds of wild grasses and plants, which, in the warm and wet environment of your flood-damaged Autaugaville home, will grow easily. Some types of plants may also be able to grow from wood or even tile grout, making them difficult to stamp out entirely. Our SERVPRO team works fast to remove significant debris and soil from your home and scrub and sanitize thoroughly to prevent vegetation from taking any permanent root in your home.
Mold and Fungi
Fungi tend to appear in any location that has been figuratively turned upside-down. A flooded home often provides the perfect habitat for fungi and especially mushrooms, with damp and warm conditions coupled with many dark corners and food sources. Some types of mold and fungi may also cause health effects, so avoiding their growth is a top priority.
Microbes and Bacteria
In any liquid water, microbes, bacteria, and pathogens are likely to be breeding even after an area has mostly dried. These occur naturally in most soils, but that doesn't mean they are harmless. Some common types of soil bacteria can be hazardous in a home. We can only truly rid a home of these microscopic critters through thorough sanitization methods, such as UV ray projectors.
Locally Owned Company with National Resources
SERVPRO® of Prattville has experience cleaning up and restoring flood damage in residences of all types in the local area. If your home has encountered a disaster, call us at (334) 358-1186 to find out how we can help.

Flooding can be devastating. Contact SERVPRO® right away after damage for remediation efforts to quickly commence.
Storms can wreak havoc on any home. You might be wondering whether there is anything you can do to stop the weather from trashing your home. SERVPRO® is here to let you know that, yes, there are several steps you can take.
Sadly, sometimes flood damage caused by inclement weather cannot be prevented. However, not all storms have the power of Cindy, and there are many instances where a few simple checks or changes to your home can prevent storm damage. Taking a few preventative measures means a home is more likely to remain intact, and you save yourself the cost of the cleanup, too.
Clean and functional gutters are more liable to survive a storm without flooding. Get your gutters cleaned regularly, especially in the fall when many leaves gather in them. Check gutters for any leaks or weak spots and get them fixed as soon as possible.
Carry out an annual roof inspection. A loose shingle in your roof gives storm water easy access to your home! Your roof needs regular inspection. Get any leaks, or other damages, repaired at once.
Consider investing in metal storm shutters for windows and doors. Storm shutters are unnecessary if you do not get many storms where you live. However, if you reside in an area that often suffers from storms, it might be worth investing in storm shutters to protect your windows when inclement weather hits.
In the event of storm damage to your home, it is crucial to put in a call to SERVPRO right away. Our caring call center staff take down your details and ask questions about your situation so we can dispatch a fully-equipped team to your home. Our IICRC-certified technicians arrive with powerful pumps to swiftly remove water from your home and extraction equipment to dry out carpets and rugs.
We know you want your home back to normal as quickly as possible, so we draw up a detailed drying plan that covers everything from carpets and drapes to wall spaces, floors, and furniture. We do not quit until the drying goal is reached. We aim to restore your home “Like it never even happened.”

However, there are a few things that you should do immediately after experiencing storm damage to return your home and life to normal as quickly as possible.
Assess the Damage
When reviewing storm damage around your home, be extremely careful. Powerlines may be down or exposed, floodwater may contain dangerous debris, and damaged trees may still lose limbs. Wear the appropriate gear to protect yourself while surveying the property.
Call Your Insurance Company
Find out what’s covered immediately. Stay in direct communication with your agent to ensure your needs are being handled in a timely fashion. Take photos of as much of the damage as you can. Have pre-damage pictures of your home on hand as well. Doing so will help with getting accurate insurance adjustments and restoration services.
Check for Disaster Assistance
Visit FEMA’s disaster assistance website to determine if assistance is available in your area. The questionnaire is anonymous and will populate recovery assistance types and contact information. FEMA representatives may walk through your neighborhood when storm damage is severe enough. In this case, speak with a local representative to start the process.
All three of the post-storm damage actions above require quick response times. If your home sustains damage from a storm, you can count on us to help. Contact us anytime to learn more about our storm damage restoration process.
Pop-Up Showers and the Damage They Leave Behind | SERVPRO® of Prattville
5/31/2022 (Permalink)
Summertime showers can be last minute and leave a trail of storm damage behind. When the unexpected happens, SERVPRO® of Prattville is Here to help®.
It is finally summer! Time to feel the sweet sunshine on our skin while laying out by the pool with an ice-cold lemonade in our hand. Many people consider summer their favorite time of year for a reason. However, summertime also brings strong pop-up showers that can leave destruction behind. SERVPRO® of Prattville is here to tell you how to prepare for the last-minute storms and how we can help.
Summer thunderstorms can “pop up” out of nowhere, thus giving them their name. Most will be harmless and leave that pesky, humid air behind. However, others can leave downed trees, power loss, and cause flash flooding.
Our advice is to remain weather aware. Meteorologists can often predict what is coming. Unfortunately, summer showers do not always give them the advanced notice we would like. So, how do you stay prepared if you are not sure when severe weather will strike?
- Have multiple sources to receive weather alerts. Battery-powered radios, weather apps, and local weather stations are all fantastic assets to have on hand.
- Watch for cumulonimbus and stratocumulus clouds. Learn what each type of cloud means and how to spot signs of potential bad weather.
- Secure all your belongings. High winds can turn unsecured objects into missiles. Loose items such as lawn furniture and children's toys should be stored away when not in use.
- Keep your trees ten to fifteen feet away from the house. Seek professional help to cut down trees that are dying or appear unstable.
- Have an emergency kit readily available. Keep first aid items, flashlights, and batteries on hand. It is also a great idea to keep a camp stove nearby that you can use during power outages.
Thunderstorms, also known as electrical storms or lightning storms, are characterized by the presence of lightning and its acoustic effect on the Earth's atmosphere, known as thunder. Although most thunderstorms are harmless, they can cause massive problems including floods, hail, and roof damage. More potent thunderstorm cells are capable of producing tornadoes and waterspouts.
On average, only ten percent of all severe thunderstorms reach the destructive category each year. Most of these more significant, more intense storms are damaging wind events. During these storms, the most important thing you can do is to remain calm and call a professional, like SERVPRO® of Prattville, when damage occurs.
Once we receive the call, our teams dispatch immediately to head to your home. Our Crew Chiefs and Production Managers will assess the damage and create a restoration plan unique to your needs. Whether your home is hit by lightning, the roof is caving in, or a tree is not part of your living room décor, SERVPRO ® is ready to make it “Like it never even happened."
One of the most complex parts of our jobs is witnessing disastrous events with homes. We may see it every day but watching someone's home tear apart never gets easier. Our team's work ethic, compassion, and desire to make a difference is our driving force behind assisting our community in their time of need.
Thunderstorms can be just as destructive as a tornado. Straight-line winds, hail, lightning, and flooding can wreck your home. SERVPRO® of Prattville is an emergency response team for a reason. We are on stand-by for our communities 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call us today to handle all your storm, fire, and water restoration needs.
What to do When Caught in a Lightning Storm | SERVPRO® of Prattville
4/27/2022 (Permalink)
Lightning storms pose an imminent threat of harm to yourself and your home. SERVPRO of Prattville is ready when disaster strikes.
Severe weather has been knocking on our doorstep lately. You have heard us speak about tornadoes and thunderstorms. Now, let’s discuss the dangers of lightning storms and tips and tricks on staying safe.
Lightning is extremely dangerous. In fact, over the last 30 years, lightning has killed an average of sixty-seven people per year. Most lightning-related deaths are preventable if you take the proper measures.
Remain Weather Alert
First and foremost, your safety is what matters. Watch the local news to catch forecasts of upcoming severe weather events and be prepared to take shelter if needed. Keep multiple sources nearby to ensure you receive weather alerts. Cancel events when news of potential high-risk weather is coming. Hot, muggy days are just what a thunderstorm needs to breed additional storm cells.
Find Shelter
When the storm approaches, take shelter. If you detect lightning, it is already close enough to strike. Do not stand under trees or in flat, open spaces. These areas can attract lightning strikes. If you cannot find a building, a vehicle with a metal roof and sides will suffice. The car will conduct electricity around you, not through you.
If you cannot find shelter in a building or a vehicle, find a place where you are shorter than your surroundings. Standing near light poles or isolated objects, lying down on concrete, and leaning on concrete walls should be avoided. Concrete has wire mesh inside the material and will attract lightning. Once you have found somewhere safe, assume the "Lightening crouch" position.
Lightning Crouch?
Squat down with your feet together. Tuck your head to your chest or between your knees. Cover your ears or place your hands flat against your knees. Do not lie flat on the ground, giving the lightning a larger target.
Be Mindful of Your Surroundings
Stay away from water, such as swimming pools and bathtubs. Do not touch anything electric like outlets or appliances. Do not go near windows or any glass panels. Glass provides a direct path for lightning to travel into. Do not forget to bring your pets inside during a storm.
Did you know landline phones are the leading cause of lighting-related injuries? Cordless phones and wireless phones are safe for use during a storm.
Be Alert for an Imminent Lightning Strike
If lightning is about to strike near you, your hair may stand on end, or you may feel a tingling on your skin. Light metal objects may vibrate, and you may hear a cracking sound. If you detect any of these signals, immediately assume the lightning crouch position. Lightning can also travel from one person to another. Ensure you have fifty to one hundred feet between each person when with a group of people.
What to do When Struck by Lightning
If someone is struck by lightning, call emergency services first. Despite the common myth, lightning CAN strike the same place twice. Make sure it is safe to help someone if they are struck by lightning. Do not endanger yourself trying to help a victim. Either wait until after the threat has passed or move the victim to a safer location.
Lightning can cause cardiac arrest and requires aggressive resuscitation methods. Begin CPR on the lightning strike victim immediately. Do not remove burned clothing unless necessary. Treat the victim for shock by laying the victim down on their back with the head resting slightly lower than the torso. Be sure to elevate and support their legs. It is always best to have an emergency kit ready with first aid and disaster essentials.
Remember that being struck by lightning is extraordinarily rare but not unheard of. Protect yourself, take precautions, and plan your response.
In the last few weeks, SERVPRO of Prattville has received multiple calls from owners whose homes have been struck by lightning. Should you find yourself in this situation, call us at 334.358.1186 for all your storm remediation needs.
Even the Smallest Flood Waters Can Cause the Biggest Problems | SERVPRO® of Prattville
1/19/2022 (Permalink)
No matter how big or small the water damage, SERVPRO of Prattville is here to help!
It has been storming all night long. You have slept like a baby listening to the calming rain and rumbling thunder. You stretch out on your bed, open your eyes, and look up at your ceiling to see multiple wet patches, some with water dripping onto your floor! The storm from the previous night caused damage to your roof, and it is leaking. What are you supposed to do now? You recall SERVPRO mentioning “When Disaster Strikes,” but what does that mean?
Disaster means “a sudden event, such as an accident or natural catastrophe, which causes great damage or loss of life.” Waking up to water trickling from the ceiling onto the floor is not the worst thing in the world, but it can be stressful! Here at SERVPRO, we are always prepared to clean and repair a disaster - no matter how big or small it may be.
Any time a storm makes its way into your area, dangerous conditions can develop that could cause damage to your home or business. Excessive rain can saturate materials on your home and deteriorate shingles. Fierce wind can blow debris, knocking through your walls or roof. Even the smallest hole in your structure can cause rainwater to seep into interior walls and cause flood damage. Saturated materials can lose their structural integrity if they are not dried out quickly. Even worse, microbial growth thrives in dark, wet atmospheres and grows in as little as 48 hours. This can be hazardous to your health.
If a storm causes damage to your home or business, make a call to the professionals. All SERVPRO employees are trained to correctly access and respond to water damage, preventing any further damage or microbial growth. When disaster strikes, call SERVPRO of Prattville so we can make it “Like it never even happened.”

Stopping Further Water and/or Mold Damage
The most important reason we respond so quickly to flood damage is to reduce the overall damage taken by the structure. Prepare in Advance for Severe Weather | SERVPRO® of Prattville
6/1/2021 (Permalink)
If you suspect storm damage from a storm, contact us. Our team is eager to offer quick assistance to start the restoration process.
It is difficult to know if a storm that is forecasted to move through an area will be severe enough to cause damage before it arrives. Storms—as well as the damage they cause—can vary wildly, which is why we always recommend taking an approach grounded in advanced preparation to remain as safe as possible.
By taking steps to protect your home, you can be certain that no matter what type of storm moves through your area, you are as protected as possible.
Be as Protected as Possible From Storms
Prepare your home as much as possible. Though the nature of storm damage might seem erratic, by doing some preparation work in advance to protect your property, you can ensure you are taking the right steps to mitigate any possible damages. Trimming back any dead or overhanging trees is a great start, as is securing any objects that could possibly become loose during a storm. Many homeowners also have whole-home generators installed, allowing for utility usage if your power is out.
Create a family communications plan. When your family is all at home when severe weather is forecasted to come through the area, you can move as a group to your designated sheltering area and be certain you are all safe. However, if a storm catches one or more of your family members while they are out and about, it is important to have a communications plan so you can check in and be certain that everyone is safe.
Make sure your emergency kit is stocked. The best thing you can do to be prepared for any emergency is to have an emergency kit in your home, and storms are no exception. Your emergency kit can house everything your family might need, both during the storm and after the fact. Items like flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, food and water are all good to keep on-hand just in case.
Consider getting a weather radio. Having cell phones has made it much easier to receive emergency weather alerts no matter where you are, but in case of severe weather, it is always good to have a backup such as a weather radio. Storms can cause power outages and even knock out cell towers, so having a weather radio that is either powered by replaceable batteries or a manual system is smart.
If your home is damaged by a storm, you can depend on us to take care of any damages. Contact us at any hour to report damage and receive a rapid response.
Ramping Up Your Spring Storm Safety at Home l SERVPRO of Prattville
4/28/2021 (Permalink)
If you experience any property damage from spring storms, contact SERVPRO of Prattville.
This year’s cold, wet winter is quickly coming to an end. Even in Alabama, where winters are typically mild, it’s easy to get spring fever during these long, dreary pandemic winter days.
So, if you’re thrilled to turn the page in February and start March with dreams of a warm spring afternoon filling your head, no one can blame you. It’s a great time to start planning new projects. For you, that might mean you want to create a vegetable garden or redo your landscaping.
Or maybe you like to spend the spring hiking or enjoying the outdoors before summer’s heat sends you back inside.
Spring is an enjoyable season, but like any season, it also brings some hazards for homeowners to manage. When it comes to this season, healthy and severe thunderstorms are always a concern.
While we don’t have the ability to make a storm take a different path around our home, we take steps to make our homes as safe and secure as possible, so they’re in good shape if a severe storm hits.
Projects to Do This Spring
Add these items to your project list this spring.
Cut and remove tree branches and limbs that need it. Limbs and branches that hang over your garage or home can be a hazard during storms. You can keep them from falling on your roof by cutting them down.
Declutter your gutters. We talk about the importance of this project every season. Keep your drains clean so that the water around your home is moving in the right direction instead of backing up and causing water damage.
Repair your roof.If you can check your roof to be sure it doesn’t have any missing shingles. Look for signs of a leak, too.
Make sure your home’s sump pump works. Not every family has one of these (or needs it), but it’s important to be sure it’s working correctly before your house goes through a rainy spring.
Don’t let items around your home become hazards. Be sure your patio furniture or other similar things don’t become tools for the wind to damage your home.
If a fire, flood or any other cause damage to your home, you can always count on us for restoration assistance. We are available 24⁄7 in the event of an emergency. Contact us at any time to learn more about our restoration services and how we can help you.

It’s Hurricane Season – Take Steps to Prevent Water Damage | SERVPRO® of Prattville
11/10/2020 (Permalink)
It’s hurricane season and one of the rainiest months is around the corner. Take steps to prevent and prepare for water damage to your property.
Hurricane rainfall presents opportunity for water damage to your property. Leaks and floods can cause damage to your property and require that you temporarily move out of your building while it’s restored. This presents a challenge as you want to get back to business as usual as soon as possible! Furthermore, severe leaks can lead to floods which can increase your risk of exposure to mold, chemical hazards, injuries, and more.
Fortunately, these inconveniences are preventable! Whether your water emergency occurs in an office building or big box store, it is imperative that you take measures to prevent leaks and damage to your property. Keep a look out for the following:
Damaged Windows
Water can seep through windows that aren’t properly sealed. This can cause mold build-up and damage to walls. Because caulk, the material that’s often used to seal windows, breaks down over time, be sure to have your windows resealed regularly.
Broken Pipes
Changes in pressure throughout the year and cold weather can cause pipes to break and burst. Although there are some tell-tell signs of this issue, such as water stains on walls or floors or an unpleasant and musty smell, detecting leaky pipes is challenging. With that said, it’s best to consult a professional to help determine whether your property has broken pipes.
HVAC Problems
Hurricane season often coincides with colder temperatures so we crank up the heat! However, ducts in the HVAC system can get worn out and damaged over time, especially during seasons like this, and cause leaks. For that reason, the system needs to be cleaned regularly and any water in it needs to be removed. Like broken pipes, it’s sometimes difficult to determine whether your HVAC system is causing a leak, so it’s best to consult a professional.
December is one of the rainiest months in Alabama and other regions of the southeast. With that said, it’s best to get ahead of the curve.
One of the best ways to get ahead is to create an Emergency Ready Profile. This is an immediate plan of action for how to restore your building after a disaster and get back to business. Additionally, we have 360 degree technology to document preloss conditions, including your equipment and where it was before disaster struck.
If want to prepare your business for future disasters, contact us today and we will help you create an Emergency Ready Profile.

7/30/2020 (Permalink)
Have you been affected by a storm event? SERVPRO of Prattville is available 24/7 and ready to assist you with any storm damage.
If you are enjoying a clear summer day, you may not even consider the possibility that the weather can turn sour—but clear skies can be deceiving. Storms thrive off of heat and humidity, so sudden pop-ups can occur with little notice and leave people desperate to find shelter.
Fortunately, there are many options for sheltering safely from a summer storm so you can be better prepared no matter where you are.
Be Prepared for a Storm No Matter Where You Are
Know your options for shelter. It would be ideal if you find out about an incoming storm somewhere you can also seek shelter, but that is not always the case when a storm catches you out and about. Experts recommend knowing how to seek shelter in your car safely in case of a sudden storm so you can always pull over and be relatively protected from the weather.
Practice electrical safety. Because thunder is caused by lightning, any thunderstorm has the potential to lead to lightning damage as well. No matter where you shelter, there is a possibility that the building will get struck, which can cause a dangerous power surge. If you can, unplug all the electronics in the vicinity to be safer. For your home and your office, installing inexpensive surge protectors around every outlet is a wise move.
Avoid direct contact with concrete. While concrete is one of the sturdiest materials to construct with, it does present certain considerations when it comes to stormy weather. Concrete is often reinforced with metal pieces, so it is recommended that you avoid coming into direct contact with it during a storm in case the building is struck by lightning.
Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes. If the skies clear suddenly after a summer storm, you may be antsy to get back outside, but beware of the false sense of security. Lightning can travel extreme distances, even striking up to 30 miles away from where the clouds are. For this reason, it is best to wait for a half-hour after the last thunderclap before heading back out.
If your home sustains damage due to a storm, you can count on us to help. Contact us at any hour to learn more about our storm restoration process.
Prattville Flood Damage Precautions To Take

Prattville Flood Damage Precautions To Take
When you first see Prattville flood damage invading your business or home, you’ll have that sinking feeling as your belongings are under mud and debris. Possessions and important papers are likely soaked through after a Lilburn flood has gone through the building, however before you wade into the water and try to salvage anything essential that you can, think about your own safety and be careful.
There are several steps you can take according to FEMA, or the Federal Emergency Management Agency to keep yourself safe from water damage in Prattville:
Put on protective clothing first, such as boots and rubber gloves to protect yourself from possible infections and bacteria.
Do not put your hands near your mouth or face while you are working.
Turn off the main power to your business or home before beginning any work.
Look for shifts in the building and cracks in the foundation.
Open up windows and doors to assist in drying out the rooms and prevent mold from forming.
Get rid of any standing water. Pump out basements slowly, about a third of the water each day to avoid any added pressure on walls and flooring. The water soaked grounds can cause the basement walls to collapse.
Clean up any silt, mud or other debris before it dries out.
As soon as you can, hose down walls and then hose them a second time with water that has disinfectant or bleach. Disinfect surfaces such as shelving.
Any appliances which have insulation will not be easy to clean up. Instead, have them checked by a professional service person before you try using them again.
Take out any furnishings and soaked materials after experiencing flood damage in Lilburn. Mattresses and fully upholstered furnishings can’t be cleaned and will need to be destroyed to avoid any health problems.
Rugs and carpeting can be cleaned. Carpeting which is permanently attached needs to be removed first before you try cleaning it. Clean the items outside or have them cleaned by a professional company.
Items such as bedspreads, sheets, draperies and curtains will need to be washed with detergents and very hot water, or they can be dry-cleaned professionally.
Any food items which got flooded need to be thrown away unless they are in cans which are not damaged by the flood, or in glass jars that are commercially sealed. Make sure to sanitize the container before you open it.
Sanitize your pans, pots, glassware, dishes, utensils and any other items that you plan on keeping. Many of these can be boiled for ten minutes to kill any germs.
When you are suffering from flood damage, it is important that you take the necessary precautions for cleaning up so you can prevent further damage and any dangerous health hazards to yourself and your family.

How Floods Can Damage Your Home

SERVPRO Expertly Removes Storm Water After Flooding to Mitigate Structural Damage
Storm flooding is often the most destructive and dangerous type of flooding, as it is unpredictable, in high volumes and typically composed of Black Water, which contains heavy debris and many contaminants. Flooding after storms cause some of the most devastating and costly damage possible to home and sometimes has the potential to destroy the place completely. There are some ways that serious storm flooding can hit a house, directly or indirectly.
Water Source Overflow
Some of the worst flooding storm damage in Prattville comes from overflowing water sources. Rivers, ponds, streams, or any other water source can rise over its banks to flood the surrounding area and any buildings within it. Any home near a water source is vulnerable to this type of damage, but homes located near a bend or twist in a stream are at particular risk.
Septic Tanks and Sewage Overflow
In some cases, faulty or swamped sewage and septic systems may overflow during a storm, dumping heavy and potentially toxic sewage water onto a street or property. This water is highly dangerous, as it most often carries dangerous pathogens and viruses and can infect people and pets. SERVPRO advises you not to come in contact with Black Water.
Flash Floods and Street Overflow
In the event of sudden, massive rainfall, flash flooding can quickly start a flood in otherwise unassuming areas. Streets can become swamped and filled with water, and this can overflow onto nearby properties. Even homes on high ground aren't necessarily safe from this type of flooding.
Basement Flooding
Basement flooding can be caused by any one of the above but deserves its mention due to how bad damage can be. Basements collect water from a wide area and often take on multiple feet of water even if the flood itself was only a few inches. Basements often require substantial water removal and pumping by our technicians, and should be seen to as quickly as possible. We have portable generators and sump pumps for emergency use on hand at all times.
SERVPRO of Prattville is locally owned and operated so as to provide fast, expert care and mitigation services in the event of a storm. If your home has been damaged in a recent storm, call us 24/7 as soon as possible at (334) 358-1186.

Types of Storm Damage
10/29/2019 (Permalink)
Severe weather can take a toll on your home. It's not unusual for storm damage to affect your home, leading to serious problems in the aftermath of the weather. SERVPRO of Prattville provides 24-hour restoration services for weather-related damage to homes.
When a storm strikes, it's important to be aware of the potential problems that can develop. You can't control the weather, but you can control how you respond in the immediate aftermath. Here are three of the issues that could afflict your home after a storm hits:
- Roof Damage: Roofs are susceptible to damage during any major storm, from heavy winds and torrential rains to snowstorms. Moisture can weaken already vulnerable areas of the roof, and strong winds can knock down loose shingles or cause visible damage to them. You may notice a leak in your attic or ceiling if a storm damages your roof.
- Windows Are Vulnerable: A thoroughly sealed and weather-stripped window is unlikely to suffer severe storm damage, but old windows that haven't been catered to recently could develop problems if it rains. For example, the moisture can seep into openings around the window, causing a leak inside the house. Rain can also cause wood to rot and mold to develop in the window's vicinity. Rugs and carpets in the area could also be susceptible to water damage. Windows in the basement are extremely vulnerable if they aren't protected, which leads to flooded basements and potentially damaged property.
- Gutters Can Become Clogged: Gutters aren't immediately obvious problems because you have to inspect them to see if they've become clogged after the storm. Rain can wash all kinds of debris into them, and once they become congested, they no longer filter water away from your home. The result could be water damage to your property, and the gutters could also suffer damage later since the excess weight of debris can cause them to sag.
Storm damage affects more than just the trees around the house. It can also have an impact on your home's foundation. After a major storm, take a close look at your home and investigate for problematic signs. If you discover anything, call the restoration service team at SERVPRO of Prattville at (334) 358-1186.

Getting Your Home More than Dry after Flood Damage in Wetumpka
Most of the properties within Wetumpka that we work on have problems with water from one source or another that adversely affects their interiors. Water, as either moisture or humidity, can cause a wide array of unwanted situations to develop, worsen, and spread. We have equipment that uses the latest technology, and our technicians hold certificates from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC).
When the water inside your home in Wetumpka comes from destructive floodwaters, the situation calls for more than the typical drying and restoration services. You need debris removal and elimination of the pathogens and other hazards that now occupy space inside your dwelling.
A flooded property requires several different types of work, and the sooner it happens, the lower we can keep your overall expenses. SERVPRO's specialists concentrate on the structure, the furnishings, and the contents of your home. Looking at these more closely, we see the amount of damage that we can undo, areas where we need to prevent damage from occurring because of raised humidity levels inside flooded homes, and contamination.
We use the ordinary bucket and shovel method to remove as much silt and other smaller-sized debris items as possible. Medium-pressure streams of water from a hose helps clear out leftover sand and mud, which we work quickly to rinse out of your home. We treat these same surfaces, as well as any other locations left contaminated, with effective disinfectants. Sprayed on, the application goes on evenly.
We also keep in mind the restoration stage that follows mitigation. Our building services team, General Contractor License # 41839, includes experts in reconstruction. They make sure that the results of our combined services fulfill our customers' needs. As soon as the moisture content of interior materials returns to normal levels, we can begin reconstruction on your home.
The electrical system in your home can end up severely damaged by flooding. Not only does the water render many components dangerous, but the interior of outlet boxes can harbor sediment. We make the necessary repairs and get your house's electricity working safely again. We can also make sure that your drains are clear. Clogs from debris that wash down through your drains need broken apart and cleared. Also, homes should have a qualified professional provide a thorough inspection of their HVAC system after a flooding event affects their home.

Flood Damage Cleaning And Restoration In Wetumpka Homes
With the Coosa River running through the heart of our city, Wetumpka residents are familiar with floods. They understand what kind of threats flooding presents to their home and health, and know that they need a professional restoration company to come in and get the job done right.
With flood damage, Wetumpka homes need thorough cleaning as well as water removal. The extra task is needed since outside water contains soil, fertilizers, animal waste, and other contaminants. SERVPRO response crews train to certify as Water Damage Restoration Technicians, or WRTs, to eliminate and remove every contaminant possible and dispose of items beyond restoration efforts.
Efforts start with spraying the surface of the standing water and all property with an anti-bacterial or an anti-microbial agent to eliminate the possible health threat from bacteria and mold. Depending on the type of surface, technicians may use a sterilant such as bleach.
Next, WRTs remove standing water and floodwater trapped in carpets or covering floors. They accomplish these steps with industrial-grade pumps and smaller extraction devices. All contaminated water removed goes into the nearest sewer access. If an access point is not available, they pump it into a tanker truck for eventual delivery to a water treatment plant.
After removing the water, SERVPRO crew members remove and dispose of all carpets and rugs. It is impossible to provide a 100% guarantee of cleanliness, so this action is the only one team leaders take. The only reason they remove the floodwater is to make disposal easier and safer for the work crews.
Now, the WRTs spray every exposed surface with another chemical agent. They can apply a sterilant on concrete, stone, and linoleum, but use a less-damaging agent on wood floors to protect against accidentally damaging them. After it dries, WRTs use either water or a mild cleaner to remove any residues.
After cleaning, crew members look for water trapped under floors and behind walls. To remove it, they spray the sub-floor and wall cavities with a chemical agent and then remove it all with small extraction devices and a hose.
At SERVPRO of Prattville, we cover a large area, including other towns like Elmore, Millbrook, and Tallassee. It is our privilege to help return homes here, and in other areas, to a clean and dry condition after flood damage. If you need us, call today at (334) 358-1186 to get started.

Where to Get Restoration After Flood Damage in Your Wetumpka Home
Flooding is a problem that no one wants to encounter. Unfortunately, buildings close to a river can flood after the river breaks its banks. Severe thunderstorms and hurricanes can also cause flash flooding in cities. Flood waters can ruin your belongings and affect your home’s structure, resulting in expensive repairs.
If your Wetumpka home has flood damage, you can hire a professional water damage restoration company to reduce the destruction. An experienced company like SERVPRO can remove the water and dry your property quickly. We can use portable pumps to remove as much standing water as possible from a home to expedite the drying process.
Once we remove the water, we can conduct moisture readings for the floors, ceilings, and walls to determine which areas need drying. The moisture readings also enable our technicians to estimate how long the drying process can take and when you can return to your home. We can also heat the affected areas. Drying occurs faster when rooms are heated to 70 to 90 degrees because hot air can hold high levels of moisture. We can use portable heaters if a home heating system is not functioning. We then use dehumidifiers to remove the moisture from the air.
Our SERVPRO technicians can also perform some repairs after completing the water cleanup and drying process. Where it’s the hardwood flooring or walls that have sustained damage, our restorers can make them look like new again. If the floodwaters have soaked into your carpet, we can remove and discard it since flood waters usually have bacteria and other harmful microorganisms. If the damage is serious, we can work with subcontractors to perform the necessary repairs. Our technicians are compassionate and can ensure that your home is restored exactly the way you want it. We have the expertise to make the damage seem “Like it never even happened.”
When dealing with flood damage in your home, SERVPRO of Prattville can assist you to restore the property to its preloss, safe, healthy and clean conditions. Our staff has sophisticated equipment to deal with water and its potential complications. Contact us through our twenty-four-hour helpline at (334) 358-1186 for prompt restoration.

Cleaning Up Flood Damage in Wetumpka is a Messy Job
The darkened skies during a torrential downpour can bring darkened water into homes around Wetumpka and leave them soaked with mud and silt. Among the soils deposited, homeowners often find waterlogged plants, other organic materials, and garbage that became washed into their homes. Because SERVPRO is a locally owned and operated business, we understand the possibilities that rainstorms can cause in our area.
When a customer calls us about their house because it sustained flood damage in Wetumpka, we assure them that we can get their home back to normal again. Flooding leaves messes behind that the CDC considers extremely harmful and full of possible unwanted health effects for anyone who comes into contact with the water from flooding, or saturated materials after the waters recede. To avoid these risks, our team members all have their own personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety gear.
Once we arrive, we do our initial inspection and consultation with you. As our inspector does this, our team members begin unloading our Green Fleet of the necessary equipment. We use buckets, shovels, rakes, brushes, and hoses to rid your home of the flood's filth. Getting things clean again takes time, and we do not want to waste any in getting started.
Because many items, like electronics and other electricity-using appliances, can become damaged if not cared for correctly, we call one of our trusted partners to inspect and test these items for you. We provide the initial cleanup of these items, making them safe for our partners to handle, however. The same applies to electrical systems and plumbing, as well as gas lines.
We often prepare an area where our partners can safely work, while other times, the item might need transporting to their site for more detailed inspections and repair work. This also protects your belongings from possible cross-contamination or other damage while we work, as well as providing us with additional space to work in your home that we would not have access to, otherwise.
SERVPRO of Prattville has dedicated specialists and partners who want to help your family recover after flood damage makes your home unlivable. Call SERVPRO When Your Wetumpka Home Has Been Under Stormy Weather
1/4/2019 (Permalink)
When a storm hits your city call SERVPRO to restore your home.
Flood Damage In Wetumpka Can Cause Problems With Your Roof And Attic
Any time a storm makes its way into Wetumpka, conditions can develop that could cause you problems with your building materials. Excessive rains can saturate materials on your building's exterior and possible cause flood damage to occur inside your home. When the rain gets thick, it can deteriorate shingles and cause your roof to leak. The wind created during the storm can blow rocks or branches into your home and create holes in your roof's structure. Once there is a small hole in your building, rainwater can get into the interior of your house and cause extensive flood damage.
If anything on the inside or outside of your building gets ruined after a storm, it is important to call in a professional restoration company like SERVPRO. Once flood damage in Wetumpka takes place the problems can slowly get worse if they are not treated immediately. Saturated materials can lose their structural integrity if they do not get dried out quickly. Elevated moisture levels in materials inside your home can increase the indoor relative humidity level which can create more problems with your building materials. If organic substances inside your house stay wet for more than 48 hours, then mold can develop.
The two most common places to suffer from moisture-related issues after a storm are your roof and attic. Once something destroys your shingles during a rainstorm, water can get the wood underneath wet. First, the roof's structure gets damaged, then moisture can find its way into your attic. Since your roof is made out of wooden materials and there is mostly wood inside your attic, moisture levels must be dropped quickly so that mold cannot develop and spread.
To accomplish rapid structural drying, our SERVPRO technicians utilize a mixture of dehumidification and air moving equipment. When working in attics, we can seal off the area with a containment chamber so that drying takes place rapidly. If you ever find your attic wet after a severe rainstorm, call SERVPRO of Prattville at (334) 358-1186 any time of the day.

Why Efficient Water Removal is Key to the Elmore Flood Damage Remediation Process
10/30/2018 (Permalink)
Sometimes flooding is just not avoidable after a storm or a river overflows. Call SERVPRO to remediate any flood damage in your home.
Drying a Structure Properly After Flood Damage in Elmore
Various problems can crop up when your Elmore property floods. Among the issues expected include mold development, rotting, and air quality problems from a combination of the first two problems, or other issues such as debris dumped in the property by the intruding waters. A thorough cleanup of the affected property helps eliminate most of the issues. However, failing to dry the structure to the right levels causes proliferation of some problems.
After the initial extraction of water and cleanup necessary after flood damage in Elmore, removal of excess moisture is essential. The process mostly involves the use of dehumidifiers. Dehumidifiers fall into two categories, desiccant and refrigerant and sometimes it is best to use the two types to get a good outcome. For instance, in the early stages when humidity is higher, the refrigerant variety is better. When porous materials are dry but structural elements are wet, the desiccant variety works best. Since our SERVPRO team is equipped with different types of dehumidifiers, we can handle the drying process effectively.
Depending on the size of the property, more than one unit might be necessary to ensure the structure not only dries properly but also within the right timeline. Remember, mold can start developing within 48 hours, so time is a significant constraint. Our SERVPRO technicians calculate the number of dehumidifiers needed by considering the capacity of each unit and the nature of the environment being dried. We check the amount of porous or absorbent materials in an area, as well as whether there is any water trapped in wall cavities.
Drying a structure would be easy if it only requires placing the drying units and waiting. However, as the process of moisture removal progresses, it requires constant monitoring so that any changes in the placement or number of equipment can be made. Sometimes our SERVPRO technicians can isolate small areas within the main structure for drying using plastic sheets. Such isolation helps because smaller drying area quickens the process.
When your property floods, call SERVPRO of Prattville to help dry it to normal levels. You can reach us at (334) 358-1186 any time. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Saving Your Home's Floors from Flood Damage in Tallassee
6/28/2018 (Permalink)
When More than a Puppy Puddle Covers Your Tallassee Flooring after a Storm--Call SERVPRO for Removal and Restoration
Swift Stormwater Removal Can Salvage Hardwood Flooring
During a flood in Tallassee, your home's entire structure can become weaker. This change takes place not only because of the water's ability to soak everything it comes into contact with but also because of its weight and the force with which it moves.
Your floors support this weight, which can significantly add to the severity of water damage experienced in Tallassee properties. Larger rooms might seem to bow downward much more than hallways and smaller rooms after a flood recedes. The structure of your home can also change slightly during a flood. Stairways leading to the basement can also warp and become unsafe.
SERVPRO can help restore your home by resolving these problems through their professional mitigation services. We do more than merely remove any leftover water. We also dry out your home and curtail a significant amount of damage to materials that might otherwise happen.
We restore your floors to a safe condition by getting them dry in a rapid fashion, but not too quickly. We use Injectidry equipment to dry the floors from the surface you see through the underlay, including joists and the rest of the internal framework. On the top, we lay down heat-producing mats that also extract any evaporated moisture. Below, we insert tubing that forces warm air into the floor so it can quickly dry out. We measure the air leaving the floor for the amount of moisture our machines force out. When this reaches a standard point, we know that the floor's interior area no longer needs further drying. A science and a little art provide professional protocols for salvaging hardwood floor boards.
We do the same with your walls, as well, and any other cavities and dead spaces inside your home. At times, we remove baseboards to drill small weep holes to allow water to drain out before forcing air inside. We always replace the mop-boards once we finish, so we remove any risk to our customers.
SERVPRO of Prattville can take your flooded home from soggy to “Like it never even happened” fast and efficiently. Our professional mitigation team is always available to help the residents in Elmore and Eclectic protect their homes from this and other types of damage. Call us at (334) 358-1186 to speak to an experienced company that is locally owned and operated.

Coosa River Flooding Can Damage Your Wetumpka Home or Business--Call SERVPRO for Help
Storm Cleanup and Restoration in Wetumpka Means a Call to SERVPRO
You need the right equipment and expertise to restore your contents after experiencing a flood damage event on your property. The restoration process starts typically from the time you call a restoration service provider, and the necessary assessment and inspection follow. After that, we employ appropriate methods to extract the water from your Wetumpka property.
Since most flood damage events in Wetumpka are associated with hundreds of gallons of water, our SERVPRO technicians use techniques that remove a large volume of the water within the shortest time possible. Depending on the situation at hand, we may use powerful truck-mounted vacuum systems and pumps to extract the water. The use of portable water extractors can be an option when the area has limited access. Where necessary, our team can perform organized move-outs and pack-outs to allow extensive restoration and cleaning.
Carpets are prone to water saturation, and during the restoration process, our SERVPRO technicians give them specific attention. We understand that latex deterioration and delamination are the main problems that carpets face during such incidents. Latex deterioration happens when the latex, which holds the secondary and primary backing of the carpet begins to deteriorate. The degeneration may lead to the separation of the secondary and primary layers in what is known as delamination. It is hard to fix carpets that have undergone delamination, in such cases, we advise the property owner to make a replacement. Typically, the fibrous materials are contaminated from Black Water requiring disposal.
Our SERVPRO technicians also examine the padding's condition during the restoration. Usually, wet conditions make it break apart, and there might be the need to do a replacement after a flood. In most cases, the cost of replacement is much cheaper compared to the drying and fixing costs.
After water removal, drying the walls, floors, and other wet contents is necessary. During that step, we use dehumidifiers and air movers to enhance dehumidification and drying. By measuring the relative humidity and temperature of the room, we are in a position to determine the number of the drying and dehumidification equipment to put in place.
At SERVPRO of Prattville, we make every water disaster "Like it never even happened." Call us at (334) 358-1186 and let our experienced team make the difference that you need.

Removing And Restoring Flood Damage In Wetumpka

SERVPRO knows that the best response to Wetumpka flood damage is a rapid one.
Removing And Restoring Flood Damage
The weather of the last year and even recently has put Wetumpka homes underwater. The flooding puts entire neighborhoods at risk and property loss can begin in less than an hour when items like books and some upholstered furniture absorb too much water.
SERVPRO knows that the best response to Wetumpka flood damage is a rapid one. We keep a response team on call, 24/7 to make sure we can be at your home in less than an hour after you call us. The process we have developed after more than twenty years serving Illinois residents provides our customers the best we have to offer when it comes to restoring their homes and property.
We start with removing anything that might bleed color or furniture finish into the water covering carpets and floors. That includes sofas, dining room sets, area rugs, and curtains as well as books and other paper products. Our team members also remove any items that might accidentally damage while removing water or otherwise restoring the home. If possible, we move it to a safe area of the home or else put it into temporary storage.
Next, we remove the flood water. We can accomplish this with commercial pumps to remove the bulk of the water and then switch to extraction pumps to draw it out of carpets and from between floorboards. The idea is to do these first two steps quickly enough to prevent or at least limit furniture damage, staining on carpets and floors, and stop rust from forming on appliances and other metal framed property.
SERVPRO technicians now lift the carpet to examine underneath. If there is a carpet pad, we dispose of it. Replacing it is far more cost-efficient than expending the time needed to attempt to dry it. If the floor still has water on the surface, we can roll up the carpet and use squeegees to push or pull water out of the room.
Once the floor is completely dry, we lay down the new pad and then the carpet. If needed, technicians use air movers to force warm air under the carpet to make sure it is completely dry.
These are the first steps we take to ensure your home is safe and dry after a disaster. More rain and storms are in the near forecast, so if your home has flood damage, or if you want to learn how to reduce the effects, contact SERVPRO of Prattville at (334) 358-1186 today. We are here for you.

We look for these and other structural hazards before beginning water mitigation and restoration.
SERVPRO techs understand that hazardous chemicals and asbestos can be present in some buildings which have been damaged by water. We look out for hazardous materials and try to avoid handling or removing them when it is above our qualifications. If needed, we use qualified subcontractors to help us dispose of these dangers.
Asbestos is especially dangerous, and we do not continue work if we find it until after calling in a licensed asbestos abatement worker to remove any materials that contain the asbestos. We never disturb these materials ourselves if we suspect they contain this dangerous chemical.

SERVPRO Technicians are Ready to Help Whether it is with Prevention or Remediation
Tropical Storm Cindy unleashed her full power on Alabama earlier this year and provided a stark reminder of just how much damage a storm can do. As any homeowner who saw the news can attest, storms have the capacity to wreak havoc on any home. You might be wondering whether there is anything you can do to stop the weather from trashing your home. SERVPRO is here to let you know that, yes, there are several steps you can take.
It is a sad fact that sometimes the flood damage in Prattville caused by inclement weather simply cannot be prevented. However, not all storms have the power of Cindy, and there are many instances where a few simple checks or changes to your home can prevent storm damage. Taking a few preventative measures means a home is more likely to remain intact and you save yourself the cost of the cleanup, too.
If you do not get many storms where you live, storm shutters are not necessary. However, if you reside in an area that often suffers from storms, it might be worth investing in storm shutters to protect your windows when inclement weather hits.
In the event of storm damage to your home, it is important to put in a call to SERVPRO right away. Our caring call center staff take down your details and ask questions about your situation so we can dispatch a fully-equipped team to your home. Our IICRC-certified technicians arrive with powerful pumps to swiftly remove water from your home, and extraction equipment to dry out carpets and rugs.
We know you want your home back to normal as quickly as possible which is why we draw up a detailed drying plan that covers everything from carpets and drapes to wall spaces, floors, and furniture. We do not quit until the drying goal is reached. Our aim is to restore your home “Like it never even happened.”

Flood Damage from Overflowing Toilet in Elmore
12/21/2016 (Permalink)
Storm Related Flood in an Elmore Bathroom Can Cause a Fall
Bathroom Overflows Can Lead to Significant Flooding
Flooding from a toilet that is malfunctioning can create quite a mess. Sometimes, you can mop up the water and dry the area properly with heaters or fans if the commode overflows in a situation that is isolated. If you experience the toilet clogging multiple times, hear a hissing sound coming from the pipes that are behind the toilet or even in the tank, then what to do? If you discover wet spots on the ceiling right below or next to the bathroom, it is time to have professional plumbers check it out and have flood damage restoration experts, such as SERVPRO, come and survey the damage before it gets out of hand.
When your toilet causes flood damage, there are different forms of damage that you should be aware of which could make your flooded Elmore home unsafe:
Damaged Flooring – All kinds of flooring are susceptible to water damage from flooding including rugs, carpet, and wood. Even waterproof or resilient flooring like vinyl planks, ceramic tiles, and laminate hardwood can crack, loosen or depreciate over time if standing water is left to dry up on its own. Evaporation takes precious hours or days, resulting in continuing harm to the surface.
Electrocution Risk – The bathroom and any surrounding rooms on the same level or below have power sources and outlets which could create an electric spark, and electrocution when they come into contact with water. Do not take chances, call for professional help.
Mold Growth – After a toilet flood, even if your infrastructure is still sound, or your ceilings show no signs of a leak, mold can set into your walls and flooring. Fungi are living organisms which feed off of organic materials in places which are damp. A bathroom that is flooded is the perfect place for mold to grow. Mold can cause serious health effects for you and your family.
The above damages are all reasons why you need to contact our SERVPRO team right away if your toilet malfunctions. The longer you allow the water to sit in your home, the more damages that you will have to deal with, including a costlier repair bill. Our technicians will have the proper equipment such as industrial fans and dryers, dehumidifiers and disinfectants to properly clean up the damage. If the water was from the water line, clean water, the cleanup is less strenuous and faster. If the backup is from the sewer line, then do not hesitate to contact us for removal and sanitizing.
SERVPRO of Prattville is always here, ready to help you if you have a problem with an overflowing toilet and flood damage. You simply have to call us at (334) 358-1186, and we will have a team to your home as soon as possible.
