The Aftermath of Fire Damage
Nobody wants to think about the possibility of their home being ravaged by a fire, but the reality is that many residents in Prattville will have to contend with this type of unfortunate event at some point. A fire in may be localized to a particular area of the home, such as is the case with a small grease fire in the kitchen. Perhaps it is more widespread, such as if lightning strikes the home or you have an electrical shortage that causes a fire. Dealing with residential fire damage requires you to take a few specific steps.
When It Is Safe to Enter the Home
The firefighters will work diligently to put out the flames, but they may not tell you that it is safe to enter the home for a few hours or even days as they want to ensure that heat does not re-ignite the flames. The extent of the fire will play a major role in how long it will take to safely go back inside. When it is okay to enter the home, you can survey the damage and see if you need to seal up areas that were left open to the outdoors because of fire damage. You can also review areas that may be damaged by firefighters' efforts to extinguish the flames. There may be several areas of fire damage that require your immediate attention.
Determine How You Will Restore the Damage
The next step will be for you to decide if you will restore the fire damage or if you will reach out to a professional for assistance. Restoring fire damage is not a matter to take lightly, so homeowners who do not have skills with both water extraction and significant home renovations will need to contact a fire damage restoration company for assistance with this task. Keep in mind that fire damage may include actual charred areas as well as water extraction, cleanup of ashes and soot, smoke removal and more.

Summer Grilling Safety | SERVPRO® of Prattville
7/6/2022 (Permalink)
“SERVPRO® of Prattville is Here to help® if your summer grilling goes from flames to ashes.”
What better way to spend a summer night than grilling out with your loved ones? Summertime is the season for enjoying hamburgers and hotdogs out by the swimming pool with ice-cold lemonade in hand. While one may think it is easy to light the grill and start cooking, there are a few safety measures you should take.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) warns families that the onset of the summer season also marks a rise in home fires started by outdoor grilling activities. According to the NFPA, on average, 10,600 home fires are started yearly by grills. July is the peak month for grill fires, followed by June, May, and August.
Did you know that 61% of U.S. households own a gas grill? 64% own at least one outdoor BBQ, grill, or smoker. The popularity of this outdoor cooking equipment combined with longer, warmer days creates a unique fire hazard that should be taken seriously.
The NFPA offers these essential tips for fire-safe grilling.
For Gas and Propane Grills
Always?check the gas tanks for leaks ?before using them. Clean the connection between the propane tank’s cylinder valve and regulator output with soapy water or a specific leak detecting solution. The cylinder valve must be?slowly?opened. If there is a leak, bubbles will form.?
Opening the lid to a gas grill before lighting is essential for safety. Gas can quickly fill your grill if the top is closed, causing the flame not to be able to escape and creating an explosion.
For Charcoal Grills
Only use charcoal starter fluid to start the fire.?NEVER?add it or any flammable liquids to a fire that is already burning. It can cause an uncontrollable fire causing harm to any structure or persons around you.?
Also, ensure?coals are completely cool?before you dispose of them in a metal container.?
For All Grills
Place your grill far away from any structure as well as deck railings. Do not place under eaves or branches. Maintain clear surroundings near your grill. Grills need proper ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide and smoke building up to dangerous levels.
Remove grease and fat buildup from grills and tray after each use. Cleaning will improve the safety of your grill and the taste of your food.?
Key Reminders
- Never leave the grill unattended when in use.
- Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grill.
- Clothing is highly flammable. Keep shirt tails, sleeves, and apron strings tucked in, so they do not dangle over the grill.
- If the flame goes out on your grill, wait to re-light! A minimum of five minutes should pass by before restarting your fire.
- Have baking soda on hand for a grease fire and a fire extinguisher nearby for other fires. If you do not have a fire extinguisher, keep a sand bucket next to the grill.?NEVER?use water to put out a grease fire.
Basic precautions set the stage for a safe and enjoyable outdoor cooking experience. Life is unpredictable, but you can take steps to control the risk of house fires. Whether you are a summer grilling warrior or a year-round grilling pro, we can all agree that the only smoke we want to smell is the sweet aroma of steaks and vegetables cooking.

Firework Safety and Hazards | SERVPRO® of Prattville
6/25/2022 (Permalink)
“More fires are reported on July 4th than any other day of the year. Use caution and be safe when using fireworks.”
Independence Day is just around the corner, and you know what that means! Celebrating our freedom, parades, remembering our country’s history, enjoying tasty food, swimming, and watching FIREWORKS! Many of us look forward to spending the day with our loved ones and watching fireworks together.
Did you know that China invented fireworks as a tool to frighten evil spirits away? They believed lighting fireworks would scare them back into the underworld, shunning them from entering our earthly world. The only thing you should be frightened of now is using fireworks irresponsibly.
Each July 4th, thousands of people are injured while consuming fireworks, most often children and teens. Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks, including devastating burns, other injuries, fires, and even death.
Let’s Talk About Statistics
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission 2020 Fireworks Annual Report, there has been a fifty percent increase in deaths and injuries since 2019. The same report shows an estimated 16,000 injuries reported for fireworks and 900 injuries reported for sparklers. Of those injuries, 44% were severe burns comprising 14% eyes, 22% head, face, and ears, and 31% hands. With statistics like these, it is crucial to know how to be safe and prevent injuries.
Light In A Safe Area
When using fireworks, you want to ensure you are lighting them in a safe location. The ground must be clear of trees or brush, with ample open space. Make sure it is flat and sturdy as well. Fireworks must be used away from structures, people, and flammable objects.
Ensure Your Fireworks Are Legal
Check your local laws and regulations to ensure that fireworks in your area are legal BEFORE buying or using them. Some counties do not allow for the use of fireworks and can carry hefty fines.
Light Fireworks Responsibly
It is essential to light one firework at a time. Remove the firework from the container, light it with a long flame lighter, and move away quickly after lighting the fuse. Ensure anyone observing the fireworks is maintaining a safe distance. Remember, do NOT try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks! Soak them in water and ditch them immediately.
Position fireworks away from homes, trees, and shrubbery. Never point or throw fireworks at another person. Never hold lighted fireworks in your hand. You want to ensure the safety of everyone and prevent as many injuries as possible.
Sparklers Are More Dangerous Than You Think
Sparklers alone can burn up to 2,000 degrees resulting in severe burns. That is as hot as a blow torch, and that level of heat can burn through some metals! Sparklers can quickly ignite clothing; many children have received severe burns from dropping sparklers on their feet. According to the National Fire Protection Association, sparklers account for more than 25% of emergency room visits for fireworks injuries. For children under five years old, sparklers accounted for nearly half of the estimated injuries. Children must be heavily supervised if you allow them to use fireworks.
Supervise Children Closely
Ideally, children should not use fireworks. The highest number of reported injuries comes from . Ensure you have close adult supervision if you allow children to use fireworks. Do not allow children to play with or light fireworks unattended.
Disposing Fireworks Properly
It is a good idea to keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of a fire. After fireworks finish burning, douse them with plenty of water from a bucket or garden hose before discarding them.
Fireworks can not only lead to severe injuries but also destructive fires. House fires, damaged entertainment venues, and wildfires are typical results of the misuse of fireworks. Know how to use fireworks safely and how to educate those around you on taking safety precautions.
Should you find yourself with fire damage because of fireworks, SERVPRO® of Prattville is ready to make it “Like it never even happened.” Call us today at 334.284.1612 for all your fire restoration needs.
What To Do (And NOT To Do) After A Fire | SERVPRO® of Prattville
5/27/2022 (Permalink)
“There is no fire too big or too small; we can do it all! SERVPRO® of Prattville is always Here to help®!”
Picture this. Your home has just caught fire. You watch as flames engulf the walls surrounding your safe place. You stare on as the Fire Department uses massive water hoses to extinguish the fire. After what seems like an eternity, you receive the clearance that your home is safe to enter. You take a deep breath and walk into your house to see soot covering everything, your belongings strewn across the floor, and smell a terrible, lingering odor. What are you supposed to do now?
Fires are not something anyone plans on experiencing. No one wakes up in the morning and moves sentimental items out of their home in preparation for the disaster. It is called "unexpected" for a reason. So, what can you do to prepare for something like this? How do you best prepare for a situation that may never arise?
First Things First
Call your insurance agent and notify them of the loss as soon as it happens. We will work closely with your insurance company through the restoration process.
Call SERVPRO® of Prattville to notify us that our services are needed. We will assemble a team and arrive as soon as possible to inspect the damage.
Depending on the extent of the damage to your home, you may need to find a temporary place for your family and pets to stay. Most insurance companies will assist you with finding temporary housing.
Pay attention to lingering smoke inhalation symptoms. Be mindful of your symptoms and seek medical care when needed.
Know What to Do Until Help Arrives
The firefighters have left your home. You have contacted your insurance company and notified SERVPRO® of Prattville. Now, you are waiting for the fire restoration to begin. What are the next steps?
Below are a few pointers on what you can safely do while waiting for professionals to arrive on the scene.
First, you want to limit movement in the home. Soot particles will cover multiple surfaces and embed into upholstery and carpets. Keep your family and pets out of the house until fully restored. Keep your hands clean and try not to touch anything if you can help it. Soot can spread very quickly and easily. A simple action like stepping onto the floor can cause the particles to disperse. Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery, and high traffic areas to slow the spread.
Next, discard any food that has come in contact with heat, smoke, or soot. Contaminated food can be dangerous. If the electricity is off, empty your refrigerator and freezer. Prop the doors open and let them ventilate. Inserting a box of baking soda into the fridge will also help remove any odors.
The HVAC filter will need to be removed and replaced. Do NOT turn on your air conditioning unit until you have gotten the all-clear from professionals. The HVAC unit will circulate the air spreading the soot throughout the home. In most cases, the house will need to have its ducts cleaned before rerunning the air conditioning.
Know What NOT to Do
- Do NOT attempt to wash or shampoo any surfaces. Removing soot or burns without the proper cleaning chemicals may further damage your property.
- Do NOT attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat, or water. Avoid anything that conducts electricity. Switching these on may cause them to short circuit and start another fire. We strongly advise consulting with an authorized repair company before further use.
- Do NOT take any prescriptions that may have been contaminated by soot or odor. Call your pharmacist to get immediate refills.
- Do NOT turn on ceiling fixtures if saturated with water. The wires may be damaged and cause electrical problems.
- Do NOT send your garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set the smoke odor into these garments. Ask SERVPRO® of Prattville about which belongings may need specialized cleaning, and we can direct you to a company that can assist you.
- Do NOT touch or move any glass in your home. Heat can cause intense pressure that will cause the glass to break after a fire.
A fire in your home can be devastating. Here at SERVPRO® of Prattville, we are here to help you restore all the pieces when it seems like there is no hope. We are highly skilled in the restoration industry, but we also know that we are helping people during one of the most challenging times in their lives. “Fire and water restoration is what we do best! Call SERVPRO of Prattville at 334.358.1186 for when disaster strikes.”
Making your home safer from fire hazards isn’t as difficult as you may think. Small things such as checking your smoke detector, keeping your appliances unplugged, and using space heaters properly can make all the difference in preventing fires. Here are some tips on keeping your home safe for you and your family.
Fire Prevention is Key
Many fire prevention tips are easy to add to your home safety routine. They are cost-friendly and can make your family safer by lowering your risk of a house fire.?
Know How to Fight a Grease fire
Grease fires are a well-known kitchen hazard. Grease fires can be extremely threatening since water cannot extinguish them. Water makes these events worse. Instead, keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Extinguish smaller grease fires using metal pan lids or baking soda as well.
Keep Your Fireplace Clear of Old Ashes
If you enjoy using your wood-burning fireplace, be sure you are not letting the ashes collect there. Clean and dispose of your ashes safely after each use.
Watch How You Use Your Space Heater
Don’t plug your space heater into an extension cord. Use one of your wall outlets instead. Ensure your space heater surroundings have a clearance of at least three feet. When your space heater is not in use, keep it unplugged.
Check Your Smoke Detectors Often
Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors monthly. Changing their batteries twice each year and replacing them every ten years will ensure they are fully operable to help protect your family. The smoke alarms should be interconnected and should all trigger if one alarm triggers. When an alarm sounds, move quickly and safely outside your home. Treat every alarm as a serious matter.
Consider Switching to Battery-Operated Candles
Scented candles are popular, especially during the fall and winter months. They add a warm glow to your home and can smell delicious. However, scented candles can be a fire hazard if they are left burning while you’re not home or knocked over. Battery-operated candles eliminate these hazards.
Keep a Fire Extinguisher on Hand and?Have Regular Fire Extinguisher Training
They seem simple, but many people may not know how to use handheld fire extinguishers properly. Teach your loved ones the PASS method: Pull the pin; Aim low, at the base of the fire; Squeeze the lever firmly and Sweep the nozzle from side to side. Remember to routinely check your fire extinguisher to ensure it is up to code.
Finally, have a fire evacuation plan for your family and practice it regularly, especially if you have small children or senior adults. Teach young children as soon as possible about the dangers of fires and what to do if one occurs.
Fire prevention saves lives. Should your home have an emergency and need fire restoration, SERVPRO of Prattville is here for you in your time of need.
SERVPRO® Quickly Responds to Local Commercial Fire | SERVPRO® of Prattville
2/4/2022 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Prattville today to discuss how we can assist your company in preparing for any unexpected event, not just fire damage!
Just this week, we received a notification from our local fire department alerting us that a nearby commercial building had caught fire. Our team immediately jumped into action! SERVPRO crews loaded their vans with equipment, and our teams dispatched. Even the owners arrived onsite to assist the team. Our emergency response team was ready and en route within seconds of notification.
It is called unexpected for a reason- no one can predict when emergencies will occur. Therefore, it is best to stay prepared. For this reason, the number one goal for SERVPRO is to be ready?“When Disaster Strikes”.?When the commercial building caught fire, everyone responded quickly to prevent further damage and ensure everyone's safety. The employees in the building knew and executed their emergency plan, first responders communicated swiftly to assess what was needed, and SERVPRO employees rushed to the scene to assist. All parties must be ready to act with a split-second notice for emergency events to run smoothly.?
Luckily this building only suffered external fire damage. Rolling fire doors prevented the fire from spreading. There was, however, water damage to the inside of the building. Of course, the fire department used water to extinguish the fire and, some of it did seep into the structure. Our teams worked overnight and into the early morning to remove all standing water. We used air movers and dehumidifiers to dry the floors and walls. We then disinfected anything the water touched to prevent microbial growth. We performed each step meticulously to ensure the building was restored to its original condition. Training is what sets SERVPRO apart from other companies. It is part of how we make it "Like it never even happened."

Odor Removal after Fire Damage | SERVPRO® of Prattville
4/19/2021 (Permalink)
Fire damage can leave behind an awful smell that affects your belongings. Click here to learn the best practices.
One of the most troubling side effects of fire damage is the smoky odor it leaves behind. Why does smoke seem to stick to everything it touches? Smoke particles are tiny and can easily embed into porous materials like carpets, furniture, fabrics, books, and even paint which are, unfortunately, very common to our homes. Furthermore, certain materials, like plastics, that burned in the fire can make removing the smell even tougher. With that said, it’s best to leave fire, smoke, and soot restoration to the professionals!
After you’ve called us and before you leave the home, please be aware of how much you’re moving around the house. Try to limit your movements because with each step or touch you can further embed soot particles into upholstery and carpets. This means that even though it might be instinctive to throw sooty towels into the washer or start washing your walls, you shouldn’t!
At SERVPRO® of Montgomery, we have technicians who have the training, equipment, and several odor removal products to identify and efficiently eliminate these odors. Our technicians can identify not only the cause of the odor, but the conditions when smoke or a fire touched the surfaces of your belongings. This knowledge enables them to often remove the odor over time without a trace.
Successfully removing offensive odors can be a challenging task, so give us a call, and leave the job to us! We’ll take care of you.
If your home or business needs fire, smoke, or soot restoration or any of our services, we are here to help. You can contact us at any hour to learn more about our services or to report damages. Get in touch today to speak with our team regarding our services.
How Would You Answer These Fire Safety Questions? | SERVPRO® of Prattville
3/19/2021 (Permalink)
House fires trend to peak during the winter. SERVPRO® of Prattville is available 24/7 in the event of an emergency.
You can take simple steps today to keep your home and family safer from winter fire risks.
These fire safety questions offer you a roadmap for easy, inexpensive ways to maintain your home and lower your fire risk:
Do you know if your furnace is in good condition? Just because your furnace is working doesn’t mean it’s in good shape. Dirty, clogged vents from your furnace can create a fire hazard that puts your family at risk. The fix is surprisingly simple. If you haven’t had your furnace checked by a heating and air professional this year, it’s a good idea to have it looked over and ensure the ventilation is clear and everything is in good working order.
Does your family have a kitchen fire extinguisher? Grease fires can happen in any kitchen. Because these fires don’t respond to water (it makes them worse) and they’re a common threat to homeowners, keep a fire extinguisher handy. Fire extinguishers can help you put out a small grease fire before it becomes an enormous blaze.
Are you using your fireplace safely? Fireplaces with chimneys that are clogged and dirty create a fire hazard. If you want to light a crackling fire, be sure you’re you’re disposing of the ashes from your last fire correctly. Also, never light a fire before you are sure your chimney is in good shape.

Easy Ways to Make Your Home Safer From Fires This Winter | SERVPRO® of Prattville

House fires trend to peak during the winter. SERVPRO of Prattville is available 24/7 in the event of an emergency.
Making your home safer from fire hazards isn’t as difficult as you might think.
You can add simple steps to your daily routine and simple home maintenance items to your checklist that will lower your risk for common causes of house fires.
Be Sure You Know How to Prevent Fires
Most of these fire prevention tips are easy to add to your home safety routine. They don’t cost a lot but can make your family safer by lowering your risk of a house fire.
Know how to fight a grease fire. Grease fires are a well-known kitchen hazard. Part of the danger they present is because grease fires can’t be put out with water. In fact, water makes these events worse. Instead, keep a fire extinguisher handy. Metal pan lids and baking soda can work for smaller grease fires, too.
Keep your fireplace clear of old ashes. If you enjoy using your wood-burning fireplace, be sure you’re not letting the ashes collect there. Instead, clean your fireplace regularly and dispose of your ashes safely.
Watch how you use your space heater. Don’t plug your space heater into an extension cord. Use one of your wall outlets instead. Also, take steps to ensure your space heater is clear on all sides by at least three feet.
Keep your smoke detectors working. Testing your smoke detectors, changing their batteries twice each year and replacing them every 10 years will ensure they are best able to help protect your family.
Consider switching to battery-operated candles. Scented candles are popular during the fall and winter months because they add a warm glow to your home and can smell delicious. But these can be a fire hazard if they’re left burning while you’re not home or knocked over. Battery-operated candles eliminate these hazards.
If your home is damaged due to a fire or any other cause, you can always count on us for restoration assistance. We have crews who are available 24⁄7 in the event of an emergency. Contact us at any time to learn more about our restoration services and how we can help your family.
Being as Safe as Possible From a Fire | SERVPRO® of Prattville
9/8/2020 (Permalink)
If you experience any property damage due to a fire, we are here for you. Contact SERVPRO of Prattville to find out more.
Avoiding experiencing a house fire in your home is something we all want to do, but are you certain you are protecting yourself from it as much as possible? A fire can begin to spread in less than a minute, and if you are not prepared, it can cause serious damage to your home and your family.
Implementing fire safety methods is not extremely complicated and will give you great peace of mind. Making sure you are practicing good habits and taking steps to protect your home will go a long way in keeping your family safe.
How Can I Keep My Family Safe From a Fire?
Check your smoke detectors. It is always wise to make sure you have the right number of smoke detectors and that they work as you start boosting your fire preparedness. You should have them on every floor and near every bedroom, and they should be checked monthly to make sure they work.
Create a fire escape plan. Having a plan for how to get out if the smoke detectors go off is key for personal safety. Exiting the home should be possible in under two minutes for everyone, and there should be two ways to escape from every room in the house.
Limit your fire risks. You can also practice small, daily habits to mitigate your fire risk, which makes a much larger impact than you might think. Simple things like clearing out your dryer’s lint trap, not leaving things near the stove that could catch fire and never leaving candles burning unattended can significantly reduce your fire chances at all.
Keep a fire extinguisher handy. When a risk of fire is elevated, such as when you are using a fireplace, cooking or grilling, you should always keep a fire extinguisher in the vicinity. Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher can make the difference between a small, contained fire and one that destroys a home, so it is not a bad thing to invest in.
If your home is damaged by a house fire, we are here to help. Our expert fire restoration technicians are here 24⁄7 to spring into action as soon as you call. Contact us at any hour to report your damage and receive a quick response.
Safety Considerations to Prevent Grill Fires | SERVPRO® of Prattville

When you want to spend a summer day outside, a freshly grilled meal is one of the best ways to make the most of it. Grilling is a great cooking method for nearly anything, but because it involves an open flame, we do always want to remind the community to take the proper safety measures every time it is time to cook outdoors.
Grill fires happen more frequently than many would assume according to reporting from the U.S. Fire Administration—close to 6,000 fires are a result of grilling incidents every year. However, many of these incidents are entirely preventable, so it is wise to know the top safety tips to remember.
The Top Grill Safety Tips to Remember
Create a safe zone around your grill. Having your grill located in a good spot involves placing it somewhere that is both convenient and safe. Because flare-ups spreading to other objects are a common cause of grilling fires, a three-foot buffer is recommended to have surrounding the grill that is free from flammable objects.
Clean your grill grates often. Your grilling grates can get dirty with every use, which is why it is best to brush them after each grilling session. Stuck on bits of food and grease not only make consistent grilling less achievable, but they also increase the risk of fires as they can suddenly ignite if temperatures rise hot enough.
Never leave the grill unattended. Catching a grill fire before it gets out of hand can be the difference in a small incident and a large emergency, so never walk away from the grill when it is lit. If you have to take a break, have someone swap in for you and always keep a fire extinguisher within arms’ reach.
Inspect the grill regularly. Grills can be subject to wear and tear with age, especially the propane connections and tubes. It is best to do a visual inspection before you get ready to light the grill so you are aware of any potential spots that could cause a gas leak, which could be quite dangerous.
If you have a grill fire that does damage to your home, we are here to help. You can call us any time, day or night, to have a quick response from our restoration experts.

To accomplish these objectives, SERVPRO of Prattville offers the following short outline regarding fire damage recovery steps:
Once a large fire strikes your property forcing you to vacate, you should not reenter. Unfortunately, fires can do significant damage to the foundation and structure of your property. It's also important to note that your property probably has standing water following the fire due to the extinguishing activities of firefighters. These factors, a few among many, make your property a dangerous place to be. Be sure to consult with the department fire marshal or another official to learn when it is safe to reenter the home.

Fire Damage In Your Prattville Residence Can Necessitate Soot Cleanup Services
After a fire, homeowners commonly find soot on ceilings, walls, and other objects or materials in their homes. Most wall surfaces, including painted drywall, brick, or wallpaper, are porous. Soot consists of fine particles that can penetrate deeply into porous surfaces, causing lingering odors and stains.
Most of the time, it's possible to remove soot from ceilings and walls, but in serious cases, it may be necessary to remove, repaint or reinstall affected materials like wallpaper and drywall. To get the best outcome from soot clean up after fire damage in your Prattville residence, you should hire a professional restoration firm like SERVPRO. Our fire restoration experts are equipped to handle the smoke, ash, and soot cleanup process quickly and effectively. We begin soot cleanup by removing most of the dry soot using a duster, HEPA vacuum or dry cleaning sponge.
When cleaning some surfaces like wallpaper, the appropriate method to use is dry cleaning. Other surfaces can respond well and tolerate wet cleaning procedures. Using a chemical-dry sponge or a dry-cleaning sponge is appropriate when a high oxygen fire has caused soot to build up in a particular area. The soot can smear and leave an unsightly stain if one attempts to use a wet cleaning method. Before we perform any wet cleaning procedures, we test the cleaning solution on an inconspicuous, small area like behind a switch plate to see if it causes any staining.
Soot can cause further damage in your home if it is ground and smudged into paint, plaster, wallpaper, walls, upholstery, and carpets. The odor that soot can cause is difficult to eradicate with typical cleaning methods and household products. Normal household vacuums are inefficient in removing soot and ash for they redeposit the particles around a house which can contaminate previously unaffected rooms and areas. Our SERVPRO technicians can use HEPA vacuums to remove soot from the affected areas, including sockets and light switches. If you do not clean these fixtures before use, short-circuiting can occur. HEPA vacuums trap the particles, preventing them from redepositing.
For help in removing soot from your home, contact SERVPRO of Prattville at (334) 358-1186. We have the tools and expertise to deal with the aftermath of a fire and restore your property to its pre-fire damage condition.
A Space Heater Threatened my Wetumpka Home
7/1/2019 (Permalink)
Don’t let the aftermath of a fire threaten you, call SERVPRO !
Let us take the threat.
Home should be the place where we feel safest. It is where we leave behind the challenges of the day to enjoy some peace. What we often fail to acknowledge is that there are threats within our home that can break that peace. Take, for example, a space heater left too close to flammable materials; resulting in flames that could burn down our house. Even if these kinds of accidents are not worthy of being on the nightly newscast, the fire damage and its restoration are best left to professionals.
In Wetumpka, if you have fire damage SERVPRO is your ally. Our fire restoration technicians (FRT) hold credentials by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification(IICRC), and this training complements our experience on the field. When disaster strikes, we bring the latest in technology and methodology to return your home to pristine conditions.
As easy as it may seem to clean smoke and soot residue by yourself, it takes a professional group such as SERVPRO to achieve a thorough clean up process. Merely applying a cleaning solution to your belongings may not be enough to eliminate its traces. Furthermore, abrasive cleaning solutions may exacerbate the damage and leave your furniture and property in worse shape than before. Our Green Fleet understands the type and path of smoke and acts accordingly. Natural elements such as wood, leaving behind a fine dust-like residue, whereas polymers leave behind a stickier residue that requires specialized solutions to remove them from your home.
Even beyond eliminating visible residue, our SERVPRO team works hard to eliminate odors left behind by the fire. We have at our disposal an array of equipment used to tailor the deodorizing solution to your specific needs. Examples of equipment we use include:
-Deodorizing pellets
-Ozone generators
-Air scrubbers
-Pressure sprayers

How Prattville Professionals in Remediate Wet Smoke Damage
5/28/2019 (Permalink)
Different types of fires create distinctive smoke residue. SERVPRO can test the damage to determine the best cleaning method to restore your home.
Recognition and Remediation of Wet Smoke Fire Damage in Prattville
A slow burning fire frequently presents more of a challenge than those that burn quickly. If a fire is left unattended, then the levels of smoke damage tend to be wet smoke predominately. These circumstances might occur by leaving an appliance like a hob or iron on when leaving the house. Wet smoke particles are much tougher to clean than faster-burning dry smoke residues, but with professional assistance, you can get your home back to its preloss condition.
Slow burning fire damage in Prattville residences is usually identifiable by a pre-test. SERVPRO technicians conduct these tests to understand what types of smoke we are dealing with and what procedure to take to ensure an efficient service. Although both wet and dry smoke is present in house fires, a large amount of either type allows us to determine the damages as predominantly wet or dry. We can also recognize and remediate protein fires as well as those caused by furnace puff back.
Slow burning fires which draw in fewer air currents create wet smoke deposits. The low level of air occurring during a slow burning fire means that the smoke deposits have more time to work into cavities around the home. These crevices are usually harder to reach and therefore, harder to remediate. Aerosols can also weaken finished surfaces and penetrate those that are non-finished.
When a SERVPRO technician recognizes wet smoke residues in the property, the first course of action is to use chemical agents alongside agitative cleaning methods. Unfortunately, these are not always effective, and we may need to strip and refinish surfaces around the home, including walls and ceilings. In some cases, replacement may be required to remove wet smoke deposits altogether, but we promise to work with a restore rather than replace method that keeps your claim rates low.
When you need restoration of wet smoke damage, contact SERVPRO of Prattville at (334) 358-1186.

Unattended Candle vs Living Room Curtains = Fire Damage in Wetumpka
Candles are one of the most frequent culprits for fire damage in living rooms. Left unattended, they post a risk of loss especially for furnishings, window treatments and electronics.
SERVPRO worked on fire damage in a Wetumpka living room caused by a candle. The homeowner regularly burned them and was only out of the room a short time talking with a neighbor at the end of her driveway when she saw smoke pouring out of her garage doorway. The fire was extinguished quickly using a home fire extinguisher, but the area around a window including the curtains was a loss.
SERVPRO arrived within hours and asked the homeowner to turn off the HVAC to stop soot from cross-contaminating other areas of the home through the ductwork. Then while a team of technicians removed the contents too charred to restore from the room, another technician contained the damaged area to stop the spread of soot and odors. The residue left behind by the fire extinguishers was quickly vacuumed up and removed.
Technicians set up high-velocity exhaust fans to speed ventilation in the living room and then began the process of cleaning the smoke damaged area. The homeowner had a high gloss enamel paint on her walls, and this did not allow smoke to penetrate but instead spread across the surface where it was easily cleaned using our professional-grade solutions.
Odor control is never a one-size-fits-all solution. Often the application of multiple methods is necessary to neutralize odors. An air scrubber lowered but did not eliminate the residual odors left behind in the carpeting and a chair that was close to the fire. So the technician chose to use a thermal fogger eradicate the remaining smoke odor, which uses a deodorizing solution delivered as a hot fog that overtakes odors in porous or absorbent items. We also inspected and cleaned the ducts to ensure the odor did not return when the HVAC was back on.
We know when you have fire damage, you need help quickly. SERVPRO of Prattville has emergency response teams available 24-hours a day by calling (334) 358-1186, and our technicians can make it "Like it never even happened."

What is a Puff Back and How Can it Cause Fire Damage to Your Wetumpka Home?
3/19/2019 (Permalink)
Inspect your furnace annually to help prevent possible fire damage.
Puff Backs Happen in Wetumpka When Your Furnace Malfunctions
Not all fire damage we tackle comes from an actual fire. Puff back is a malfunction of an oil-burning furnace that sends soot and residue all over walls, ceilings and any objects in the path of the spew from the unit. This situation often occurs after the furnace has been off for some time and then turned back on and fails to ignite initially. Vapors build up in the ignition chamber, and when the spark from the igniter attempts to light, soot and oil residue blow through the exhaust system into the home. Anywhere this is a register has the potential to spread the soot throughout the home.
When SERVPRO remediates a Wetumpka home for fire damage type issues after a puff back, our technicians first determine where the soot and residue have landed within the home. The soot damage can range from light particles that are barely visible on countertops to oily dark streaks and solids that resemble a spider's web, and then there is the smell. The odor left behind is unpleasant and needs eradicating.
Damage from a puff back should never be cleaned up on your own. Soot particles can be unhealthy to breathe, and the home requires professional cleaning. SERVPRO technicians have both the knowledge and equipment such as HEPA filtered air scrubbers in tandem with activated charcoal filters to remove the odor-causing particles from the air. Technicians hand-clean restorable items using professional-grade cleaners and wet and dry sponge techniques.
SERVPRO has certified Odor Control Technicians (OCTs) experienced in removing foul odors from homes, and they have numerous resources at their disposal. Thermal fogging is a very effective way to neutralize foul odors left behind by a puff back. The OCT uses a fogger to deliver a hot vapor that works much like smoke and penetrates porous objects to eliminate the odors and leave no trace of the smoke or soot odor.
A puff back is just as dangerous as fire damage and should be professionally cleaned up as soon as possible. To get started, call SERVPRO of Prattville at (334) 358-1186, and one of our expert technicians can begin the process to turn back the clock on the damage to your home and make it "like it never even happened."

SERVPRO's Fool-Proof Formula For Easy Fire Damage Restoration In Tallassee
9/25/2018 (Permalink)
While you might not think of a maxed-out outlet as a source for fire damages in your home, you might find yourself surprised at how common it is.
Overloaded Electrical Systems Can Cause Fire Damages In Your Tallassee Home
An alarming fact is that many Tallassee homeowners are not aware of some of the things that they might regularly do to pose significant risks to their property. An excellent example of this might be overloading the electrical systems throughout their house at specific outlets. Not only is this unwise for the devices and appliances that use this particular outlet, but it also can allow for the unfortunate event of combustion and fire.
While you might not think of a maxed-out outlet as a source for fire damages in your Tallassee home, you might find yourself surprised at how common this occurrence is. The breaker box and fuses get designed to trip or shut off when certain networks become overloaded, but this is not a failsafe that you want to rely on to work explicitly. One malfunctioning component and a spark could occur which ignites materials in the nearby area.
One of the ways that you can avoid this occurrence is to ensure that the outlets that you have installed can accommodate the appliances and devices you plug into them. Avoid using extension cords where possible, as this extends the reach of the electrical system but adds more potentially faulty components to combust and ignite. Fire damages of this magnitude often require professional restoration to recover, much like our SERVPRO technicians can provide.
From the moment that our experienced SERVPRO team arrives at your home following an electrical fire, we can assess the full scope of structural damage and fire effects to develop an efficient plan to restore your home completely. Often our services are at the behest of the insurance company that offers coverage to your home, but we are available for you the client whenever you need us.
While it might be a common occurrence to push outlets beyond their power limits, you should understand that this could eventually result in fire damages to your home. If you face an emergency, you can always depend on our SERVPRO of Prattville rapid response team to help you bring your house back to preloss conditions as efficiently as possible. Give us a call anytime at (334) 358-1186.

Preventing Fire Damages To Your Tallassee Residence
8/8/2018 (Permalink)
One of the most unexpected and devastating occurrences to your Tallassee home is a fire.
Preventing Fire Damages To Your Residence
One of the most unexpected and devastating occurrences to your Tallassee home is a fire. To make matters worse, many of these situations could get avoided with the right precautionary measures and better education. Most homeowners assume that smoke detectors offer enough of a warning about the dangers of a disaster in your house, enough to notify first responders before too much damage occurs, but this is not always the case.
This occurrence is not inevitable nor is it something that even most homeowners have to experience throughout their lives. Still, fire damages can prove a lingering menace in your Tallassee home that requires attention from trained professionals like our SERVPRO restoration team. In even the best of circumstances, fire can still leave its mark on your house that conventional cleaning methods are unable to restore.
However, there are ways that you can better prepare your home and help to prevent a fire from ever starting actively. Much of this precautionary work comes from being more mindful of appliances in your home as they age, as these can often be a source of ignition. Another measure you can take is to ensure that you have fire suppression equipment in utility areas of your house for easy access.
Fire extinguishers are a great example of suppression equipment that you should have readily available throughout your home. These can help you to put out a small fire before it has the opportunity to get out of control and cause significant damage throughout your house. A quickly extinguished fire often leaves only minimal damages for our SERVPRO professionals to restore, making the process much quicker and ultimately cheaper.
While there are many ways that you can be more mindful around your home to help prevent the possibility of a fire, there are also some instances where it cannot get avoided. If you have already experienced fire damages in your home, count on our SERVPRO of Prattville fire restoration technicians to restore the damage quickly and get your home back to preloss condition. SERVPRO's rapid response team is available 24/7 at (334) 358-1186.

Fire Damage in a Millbrook Home HVAC System
7/6/2018 (Permalink)
Fire & Smoke Cleanup and Restoration in Millbrook? Call SERVPRO for Great Results
Smoke Residue and Odors Are Key Elements Needing Cleanup after a House Fire
After a fire, Millbrook residents are very conscious of the damage to their homes and take the necessary steps to clean and return them to a clean state. One area that often goes unnoticed, however, especially if the fire was short and did minimal damage, is the heating and air or HVAC system.
Even when there is no physical fire damage to the HVAC in a Millbrook home, there are still problems to address. The residues left behind by smoke and burning property can cover the vent covers and ductwork. SERVPRO technicians know that once the HVAC is activated again, these residues can spread throughout the entire home, causing damage to personal items if not structural property.
The severity of damage depends on where the fire started, how fast it burned, and what fueled it. For example, a kitchen fire usually starts small, so it burns slowly, going through food, metal pans, plastic handles, and fabrics like cotton dishtowels. A fire like this one usually sends up a large amount of smoke. The residues it leaves are often sticky and difficult to remove.
A fire which starts in another part of the house as a living room is different. While it may start slowly, the fire quickly begins to burn faster, consuming furniture, paper, carpets, and eventually, building material. The residues left behind from a fire like this one are drier, more like powder, and easier to clean, though the charred materials may be much greater than a small kitchen fire.
In the case of an HVAC system, the powdery residues can be wiped off vent covers using a dry sponge. If they have not gotten too far into the ductwork, SERVPRO technicians can remove them using a larger sponge on a telescoping, long handle. If the residue is slightly sticky, technicians use water or a mild detergent to break them up for removal.
For residues from a kitchen or similar fire, our restoration teams use a much stronger cleaning agent. They combine it with a long-handled scrub brush to break up the residues for removal. With both kinds of residues, technicians can also remove them with a vacuum hose.
For residues that penetrated deep into the ductwork, our teams can use a fogging machine to generate a cloud of cleaning agent. They force it through every duct, breaking up the residue and then use fans to push it all outside the home.
If you have cleaned up after a recent fire, but still find smoke residue throughout your home, it may be a problem inside your HVAC. Call SERVPRO of Prattville today at (334) 358-1186 to determine if you need additional cleaning services.

Fire damage can catch you off guard as well as overwhelm you. Contact SERVPRO right away for best remediation results.
Team SERVPRO Understands the Science Behind Fire Damage Residues
After a fire damage incident, the smoke particles which are left behind are not the same. While some of them are easier to clean, that is not the case when it comes to some soot residues. The most common soot types that most fire events in Tallassee leave behind are wet smoke residues, fuel oil smoke residues, dry smoke residues and protein smoke residues.
Most fire damage incidents in Tallassee leave behind a mixture of both dry and wet smoke. Despite that, the proportions of the two types cannot be the same. With that in mind, you now understand why our SERVPRO technicians use different cleaning techniques when removing the various forms of smoke particles. Generally, eliminating dry smoke is a little bit easier when compared to dealing with wet smoke.
Under dry smoke conditions, some materials are salvageable since dry smoke carries along a few deposits and aerosols. It also means it does not cause severe stains on surfaces, and its odor is less pungent. When cleaning such surfaces, our SERVPRO technicians use less abrasive cleaning procedures. Its major downside is that hotter fires are its primary cause, which means it causes substantial heat damage when compared to cooler fires.
Wet smoke has a high proportion of solvents, aerosols as well as other liquid contents. Slow-Burning fires usually cause it, and that means it has enough time to find its way into enclosed areas and cracks and cause further damage. Though it causes minimal heat damage, most materials exposed to such conditions are not salvageable. When our SERVPRO technicians are attending incidents, even refinishing and stripping is not enough to do the job and that calls for replacements.
After cleaning, we perform deodorization to neutralize the pungent odors. In all our operations, we are keen to abide by the state's regulations and standards outlined by IICRC.
SERVPRO of Prattville is a reliable leader in the restoration industry that addresses water, fire, storm, and mold damage. Call us at (334) 358-1186 and get tested services from our highly trained restoration technicians.

Team SERVPRO Understands Soot and Residues Formed By Fire
If a fire ever takes place inside your Wetumpka home, there are different ways it can cause damage. Every fire burns things inside a building differently. A blaze inside a structure behaves differently based on many factors including the type of fuel burned and how the fire was started.
When mitigating problems that take place after a fire, different methods get used based on how things got burned inside the home. SERVPRO's fire damage technicians in Wetumpka study how smoke and flames behave so they know how to deal with the various situations. By knowing the behavior of a blaze, we are better able to save items without having to replace everything that got affected.
A massive part of fire damage restoration is cleaning and removing soot residues created by smoke. Soot residues vary based on many things that took place during the burn. Some soot and soils are easily cleaned, while others may take a variety of methods to remove.
Any time something gets burned, combustion takes place. Combustion occurs when a solid is turned into a gas by heat. As combustion happens, the solid materials break down and combine with oxygen while heat is given off.
For complete combustion to occur, three things must be present. To turn all of a substance into a gas, there must be a fuel (which is whatever material is being burned), heat and oxygen. In theory, if there were a perfect balance of all three of these things, then all of the burned material would combine with oxygen and disperse into the air.
However, in most cases, full combustion does not take place. Smoke and soot are created when parts of the burned material do not fully combust all of the way. Since the presence of fuel heat and oxygen varies in different sections of the burn, smoke and soot almost always get created during a fire and cause damage to various rooms inside the house.
The variance of amounts and types of fuel, oxygen, and heat is what causes various types of smoke and soot residues. For professional assistance with smoke and soot cleaning and restoration call SERVPRO of Prattville at (334) 358-1186 24/7.

Call the professionals at SERVPRO to restore your home after fire damage "Like it never even happened."
Rely on SERVPRO to Properly Restore Your Home after Fire Damage
Fires can reach extreme temperatures that often affect the loadbearing capacity of many structural components installed in your home. If you put the noticeable visual effects aside, thermal expansion erodes the strength of many materials left behind, often causing damage in other parts of your property not directly affected by the fire.
When dealing with fire damage in your Wetumpka area home, make sure that your restoration specialist remains flexible to a variety of situations while working towards maintaining the structural integrity of your building. They should always make explicit efforts to form remedial measures that help restore the building to its original design and compensate for any weaknesses discovered as a result of the fire.
In some situations, replacement of damaged materials become more practical than restoration, in other words, it may not be possible to restore everything. However, even with a variety of challenges added to the situation, SERVPRO’s IICRC-industry certified technicians remain your best option for working towards a full recovery. We can often save many items such as furniture, appliances, personal belongings, and additional household components that appear unrestorable to the untrained eye.
Our technicians understand that glass, metal, lead, aluminum, alloy, brass, bronze, and copper items show a significant loss of strength after being exposed to a fire. The wood used to construct your home’s framework can often retain structural integrity even after the surface ignites and chars at a steady rate. SERVPRO technicians can remove charring and perform a full inspection of joints, connectors, and interior structural elements to help limit additional losses.
By putting a variety of personnel, equipment, and resources together, SERVPRO can provide you with the services necessary to clean, deodorize, and restore your family home to a quality pre-fire damage condition. SERVPRO Fire & Smoke Cleanup in Wetumpka Includes Teddy
Count on SERVPRO for Fire Cleanup and Odor Control
After a house fire in Wetumpka, the many changes affecting a family can become highly stressful. Now, the security of 'home' is absent, and many of the items used daily are also gone. Often, the changes can affect work and school schedules, also. Meals and other times spent as a family diminishes significantly.
Homeowners in Wetumpka who rely on professional fire damage restoration experts find themselves able to return home quickly. Even small fires that result in nearly unbearable circumstances in only one area of a home can bring about hardship on a family. In some situations, the home's interior barely suffers any damaging effects while personal belongings become heavily soiled with soot and odors.
We train our technicians, so they become certified IICRC Fire and Smoke Restoration Technicians (FSRT) as part of an on-going training program. We can restore both damaged homes and the soft contents inside them, helping our customers' families regain their normal lives once again.
Professional restoration of personal belongings in the past entailed a great deal of work and could still produce shoddy results. Recent developments provide much better endings when restoring belongings and home furnishings. Soot can become deeply embedded in textiles, making it nearly impossible to clean.
Being able to clean items that our customers would feel forced to throw away in the past brings both them and ourselves immense satisfaction. When a child of a customer can reclaim her sooty Teddy Bear, the sense of accomplishment is powerful. We can readily remove soot from hard surfaces and eliminate much of the soot particles on many materials in the typical home. However, as long as any soot particles remain, odor continues to waft into the air near these items. Cleaning your soot-covered belongings makes them more than clean – it makes them feel, look, and smell clean again.
SERVPRO of Prattville wants to make fire damage a thing of the past as swiftly as possible for the families in our community. By calling us at (334) 358-1186, you begin our 24-hour services. Cleaning Your Walls and Ceilings After a Space Heater Fire in Your Wetumpka Home
10/11/2017 (Permalink)
Improperly used space heaters can quickly start fires. Make sure to use your space heaters as directed and contact SERVPRO after a fire.
SERVPRO Technicians Clean Your Property Efficiently After Fire Damage
Space heaters are one of the most common appliances which can cause fires and fire damage in Wetumpka homes. When they are run continuously or are too near items which are combustible, such as curtains, you run a greater risk for a fire starting. You should place your space heaters at least three feet away from anything flammable. A space heater can start a slow burn, going unnoticed for a long while if you are sleeping, as your home fills with smoke.
When your Wetumpka home has suffered smoke and fire damage from a space heater, do not attempt to clean up the damage yourself. A professional fire remediation company, such as SERVPRO, is needed to take care of the problems the smoke and fire have left behind. We can also clean up any water damage which has been left from putting the fire out.
Restoration after a fire includes us removing soot residues from the various materials and surfaces in your home. Not all soot is the same. Some of it is simple to clean, while other soot can be very difficult to remove.
Procedures for cleaning ceilings and walls after a fire address various surfaces including painted, stipple, textured plaster, finished or unfinished paneling or wood, and sprayed-on acoustic plaster. Before beginning any work, we identify the surfaces of your walls and ceiling while pretesting for cleanability.
SERVPRO technicians organize the dry cleaning of your home to avoid creating a bigger mess. Therefore, we dry clean ceilings before walls, and walls before floors. We start at the top of walls, working downwards. When this is the only process to be done, we avoid making the area dirty again by wiping from dirty areas to clean ones.
When we need to wet clean ceilings and walls, we do the walls first. Cleaning the ceilings first with this method can cause cleaning solution to fall from the ceiling, dripping on soiled walls and creating streaking. We also start cleaning the wall from the bottom and work upwards, as this stops solution from dripping down onto a soiled surface and make streaking as well.
A spotting pad holder and extension pole are used to reach higher ceilings, and a five-foot ladder can be used to reach ceilings that are eight feet in height.
For areas that are heavily soiled, we use steel wool pads to clean more aggressively. As the pads become moderately contaminated, we rinse them thoroughly and keep using them. Since the pads might scratch the surface area, we use them only when walls or ceilings need to be repainted.
SERVPRO of Prattville is well-trained in the proper cleaning of fire and smoke damaged homes. Contact us as soon as a fire is out at (334) 358-1186 when you reside around the areas of Millbrook, Wetumpka, or Prattville.

Practicing Microwave Safety to Prevent Fires and Smoke Damage in Your Wetumpka Home

SERVPRO Tip--Maintain Small Appliances in Your Wetumpka Home to Help Prevent Fire & Smoke Damage
Smoke is a Major Problem with Faulty Appliances in Your Home
Just about every home in Wetumpka has a microwave oven. They make the preparation of food much easier, but they can also be a fire hazard if not properly used or there is a malfunction of the oven. There are some simple safety tips you and your family can follow to prevent painful burns and potential fires in your home.
For installation and operation, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, plus their safety precautions before using a new microwave to prevent fires and fire damage. Do not ever use an extension cord to plug your microwave oven in at your Wetumpka home, but rather, plug it directly into a wall socket. Children should also be supervised always when using the microwave. It can be easy for them to forget and put something in the oven that is not suited for it, causing a safety hazard.
When a microwave fire has damaged your home, however, SERVPRO is standing by to come to your rescue. Our technicians can arrive quickly after the fire is out when you contact us so that we can repair and restore all that is possible.
You should only use microwave-safe food containers in your microwave oven. Do not ever use metal or aluminum foil in it, as the metal can spark a fire quickly. At the very least, the metal damages your oven and makes it unusable.
Also, do not try to sterilize clothes, baby bottles, or blankets in these ovens, as these items can result in a fire after they are removed from the oven.
Clean your microwave regularly to reduce the potential for fire. Unplug the oven when you are cleaning it and be sure that the inside and outer edges of the microwave are cleaned. Do not use recycled papers inside the oven, either, unless it is approved specifically for microwave use. Products which are recycled, including paper towels, can contain minute metal flecks which cause sparks and flames. Have you ever noticed sudden small, quick sparks? Fire statistics, caused by faulty appliances, are frightening.
Heat popcorn up according to what the instructions state, starting with the shortest time suggested since some microwaves can burn popcorn in just two minutes.
If your microwave does catch fire, turn it off right away and unplug the power if it is safe for you to do. Do not open the door, but wait until the fire dies out. When the fire has caused damage to your home, do not hesitate to contact our staff at SERVPRO as soon as the fire is out, no matter the time of day. We repair anything that is salvageable, clean and sanitize your home from soot and smoke damage, plus clean up any damage done by firefighting efforts.
SERVPRO of Prattville are experts at cleaning up your home after you have experienced fire damage from a microwave oven. Anyone living in the areas of Tallahassee, Wetumpka, or Prattville can reach us anytime by dialing (334) 358-1186.

Possible Fire Damage from Frayed Phone Charger in Your Wetumpka Home
7/16/2017 (Permalink)
Don't use wires that have visible damage. If your house does have an electrical fire, contact SERVPRO for remediation and restoration.
Electrical Fires Happen Quickly and Need Immediate Remediation by Qualified Technicians
Everyone has at some point gone ahead and used that damaged phone charging cord, not thinking it would do any real harm. However, why do you need to say goodbye to these damaged cords?
Electrical failures, electrical fires, or malfunctions have caused thousands of home fires and fire damage. Your damaged phone cord can create one of these fires in your Wetumpka home very easily and should be replaced right away. SERVPRO, a professional fire damage remediation company, can assist you in cleaning up and restoring your home after a fire if you have unfortunately experienced a fire of this type.
Phone wires can be damaged in various ways. One of the most commonly seen is when the cable is yanked from the wall to unplug it from the wall socket or side of your laptop, instead of pulling the connector or plug itself. The plug is pulled from the wire covering, which leaves exposed wires dangerously near where your fingers go, but can also snap the grounding prong for the plug.
Cords can sometimes be caught under the leg of a chair, in a door, or even chewed on by a pet. These all lead to pinching, resulting in sliced cords which expose wires that are energized. You risk electric shocks, but also short circuits, fires, and damaged gadgets.
Your phone cord is made up of three layers. The outer is a plastic or rubber which snuggly fits around the wires. Then there is the insulation that gives a bit of protection against wear to the layer farthest inside, the copper wires which are energized.
Once you see damage beginning to happen to the outer layer, that is a hint that the inner layers could also be damaged. You are then at risk for short circuits and fires. When you see this kind of harm, you can patch it temporarily with electrical tape, but replace it as soon as possible.
Our SERVPRO technicians do not waste any time in getting to your home to clean up and repair damages after a fire from a frayed power cord. We understand that the longer the soot and smoke sit, the more damage is done. Whatever can be cleaned and salvaged is taken care of, and when everything is fixed the affected area is deodorized.
Do not hesitate to contact SERVPRO of Prattville if you experience a fire of any size. We can take care of your home for you and restore it back to its original state when you dial our number at (334) 358-1186.

Selecting the Right Space Heater
You want a space heater which includes a heating element with a guard around it. Pick a heater that has been certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory and one that is the right size for the area you are trying to heat. The wrong size heater might not be an efficient use of energy. Make sure to also read and follow the operating instructions from the manufacturer, ensuring everyone who uses it knows how to use the heater safely and correctly. Check to see if the heater has an automatic safety switch, which acts as a cutoff switch that turns the heater off if it falls over.
Preventing a Fire
Put the heater on a surface which is hard, level, and stable. Do not place it on countertops, tables, or other furniture. Keep the heater three feet or more from files and other items which are combustible. Do not use the heaters in an area where water is present, such as a bathroom, and do not place items such as files, books, papers, or the like on top of the space heater.
The space heater needs to be plugged into an outlet directly. Do not use an extension cord, unless it is specifically approved and safe for such use. You should also not plug the space heater into a surge protector strip for your computer. These strips are made specifically for computer equipment, and other appliances being plugged into them can negate the warranty on your PC hardware. Keep the space heater off when you are leaving the area, and do not ever leave it on when not at home. Do not use the heaters with cords which are frayed or cracked, as this can easily spark a fire.
If a fire still starts even when you have followed these precautions, do not hesitate to get in touch with our professionals at SERVPRO once the fire is out. You need to act quickly so that the soot, smoke, and water left after the fire do not do even more damage to your home. Fire and Soot Damage in a Home
Smoke and Soot Damage are Best Handled by Professionals at SERVPRO
If your home has had the experience of a fire, you know that fire damage can be extensive. Settled smoke and soot throughout your home must be cleaned up immediately to reduce the ongoing damage of the corrosive nature of the soot's particles. The oily property of soot can make cleaning up a very tiresome chore, and special cleaners should be used.
Our team of restoration specialists are specially trained and certified in IICRC techniques. We have the skills, training, experience, and equipment to reduce the damage your home's interior and contents suffer. Smoke, even though it has settled, can cause complications in individuals who already have respiratory problems. Homes that have not been cleaned of smoke and soot should not be occupied until the cleaning and restoration processes are completed.
Why Soot is So Difficult to Clean
The types of soot and smoke that are created during a fire are varied, and these variations are dependent on what materials are burning within the home. Sometimes soot is drier and more easily cleaned but this only true if the materials burned were dried wood or paper products. Very few house fires experience this. Some of the burnt materials' smoke and soot combine together, further complicating the cleaning procedures needed to complete the work correctly and fully. Professional training is required to gain the knowledge about these different types of soot deposits within the broad scope of fire damage.
The particles in soot can be as small as .0004 microns in diameter, necessitating a microscope be used to view them individually. Because they are so tiny, they are often difficult to remove without specific tools and instruments. The microscopic particles are what creates the foul odor after a fire, and even with cleaning by professionals, a gas treatment is often required as a final step to completely eliminate these odors. Using ozone, or O3, we can remove even the faintest odors left behind by a fire. Treatment by ozone is safe, and does not take a very extended period of time, but must be done as one of the last steps.
Because of the complicated aspect of soot and smoke deposits after a fire, this type of work is not recommended as a DIY project. Our technicians have the correct equipment and supplies available to them so they can make it “Like it never even happened.” If you have fire damage in your Wetumpka area home, it's best to leave this difficult cleaning job for the trained professionals at your local SERVPRO office. Call SERVPRO of Prattville at (334) 358-1186 for promptest service. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Elmore Fire Damage - Cleaning Fire Damage in Elmore
5/11/2016 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Prattville will respond immediately to your fire damage emergency needs in the Elmore area! We're only one call away!
Elmore Fire Damage Cleaning
Soot and smoke can penetrate and travel to other rooms, affecting the carpeting, paint, drapes, upholstery, clothing and other items. Debris removal and ventilation of the scene of the Elmore fire is a good first step to take in cleaning up after fire damage occurs. Neutralizing and thorough cleaning of both the odors and the deposits are needed before you try and do any redecoration.
General Cleaning Techniques to Getting Started
Different kinds of Elmore fires need different techniques for cleaning. High-oxygen fires usually will result in dust, dry soot, but slow-burning fires with low oxygen will result in wet, greasy deposits which smear easily. Therefore, the process of cleaning needs to take these variations into account.
A few guidelines and cleanup recommendations:
Wear protective clothing such as pants, long-sleeved shirts, and gloves. Wash off any ash, which gets on your skin, as soon as you can.
Also, wear protective gear like a dust mask, so you don’t breathe in any ash or other particles that are airborne.
Open doors and windows to ventilate the area to help remove odors and soot.
Get rid of any debris that is burned to lower odors.
Place dehumidifiers inside the building to control the moisture in the air and prevent mold or water damage, especially where water was used to put out the fire.
Use cooking oil to wipe down all metallic surfaces to stop rusting or staining.
Clean plastic, PVC surfaces like windows and surfaces which are painted white with a mild alkali detergent to get rid of any possible acidic soot that can activate with moisture in the air and cause staining which is permanent.
Go through triage assessments to remove or clean all contents as soon as you can in the order of value.
You should not use deodorants of any kind since they mask odors after fire damage in Elmore, and odors are a significant indicator of any health concerns.
Where you can’t get rid of surface staining, think about using specialist paint to get rid of anti-bleed and stain characteristics. These paints are usually oil-based or lacquers.
Specific Kinds of Damage and How to Clean Up
High-Oxygen Fire Damage
Dry sponges can be used to get rid of initial deposits and then you can follow up with a detergent that is low-alkali, then rinse thoroughly.
Low-Oxygen Fire Damage
Using a dry sponge here is not advised, as it will make smears and cause the soot to spread. Instead, use detergents which are high-alkali with warm water and then wash down the area. Thoroughly rinse when you are done, since residue can affect any subsequent paint applications.
Kitchen Fire Damage
You will need to do a thorough cleaning since fire residue might not be easily visible. Remember that kitchen drawer and cabinet contents need to be taken out to let you access any hidden areas.
